Cliffs of Moher
Cliffs of Moher is the most visited natural attraction in Ireland, receiving more than a million visitors every year. It is an amazing place that is really worth visiting, even if you are just visiting Ireland for a few days.Antes de apreciar esta maravilha da natureza você vai encontrar um amplo e completo centro de visitantes que foi projetado no estilo caverna para ter o menor impacto visual possível com a natureza.
The Cliffs are on County Clare (around 255 Km from Dublin) and are so amazing they will remain in your memory forever. Before enjoying this nature wonder you will find a wide and complete visitors centre, which was projected on a cavern style to have the least visual impact on the nature.
You will be able to read and enjoy loads of information on the geological formation of the region, about the sea, types of animals and birds found there and much more. Stop there for at least 30 minutes before going for the walk.
At the Cliffs View Cafe, there are several meal choices, like salads, pizzas, soups, cakes, etc - besides having a lovely view.
There are also several stores with all kinds of souvenirs and presents available.
There is even a small meditation room.
Cliffs of Mohers bears this name due to an old fort in the region called "Mothar". They started to be "built" by the nature 320 million years ago on the Upper Carboniferus Period, a large river that used to run in the region brought loads of mood, rocks and sand. Little by little it poured all this material forming the rocky layers we see today.
They are on total 8 Km of Cliffs (5 miles) and the tallest point is 214 metros high (700 feet).
On one of the main spots is the O' Brien Tower, built in 1835 by Cornelius O' Brien (who was supposedly one of the descendants from Brian Boru, first King of Ireland) with the intention of create an observation place for tourists which since the 18th century visit the place. And you will also be able to go up in the the tower and enjoy the landscape. E por falar em filmes vários deles tiveram os Cliffs como cenário em algumas cenas como o clássico A Filha de Ryan e Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
The biggest waves in Ireland (called Aileen's) are on the base of the cliffs, and were already shown in films like "Sea Fever" and "Waveriders" (check the trailer here). And mentioning films, loads of them had the Cliffs as the scenario in some of the scenes, like the classic Ryan's Daughter, and also Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
And it is always good to hightlight to be very careful, because some parts can collapse at any moment. We saw several people getting too close to the abyss, as you can see on the pictures below - which is totally careless.
There are many signs saying which is the best way to follow. Wear proper shoes, in some points the ground is very uneven.
Having said that, enjoy your trip and we hope the day you go there are no clouds in the sky, this way the landscape will be one of the most spectacular your eyes have ever seen!
