Waterford - Ireland's Oldest City
County Waterford is located on the Southwest of Ireland, and its capital bearing the same name is the oldest city in the country, being more than 1,100 years since the foundation. When you walk on the streets you can still see a lot of its Viking heritage.
On today's post I will tell you about some of the places you can visit in the city.
TOWERS AND MEDIEVAL WALLS
There are remainings of some walls and towers built by the Scandinavians. By means of maps spread around the city you can see the ones still standing.VIKING TRIANGLE
The region of walls and some important historical places is called Viking Triangle.
This boat is an accurate replic of the boats used by the Vikings when they arrived in Waterford by 914.REGINALD'S TOWER
And next to the boat is one of the most emblematic buildings of the city, the Reginald's Tower, considered the oldest still standing building in Ireland, built in 1003. The tower was fundamental as a deffense spot during the several invasions the city had along the Centuries. It was built in a very strong way that it was never put down. In some parts of the walls you can still see the cannon balls shot against it.
The tower has already been a Mint, militar warehouse and prison. Today it is a museum and can be fully visited (it has 3 floors). Details on the history of this amazing building can be learned. Check out the thickness of the walls.
And if you want to have a full experience, stop for a while at The Reg Gastro Bar (next to the tower), a delicious pub with good food and Irish music!Thomas Francis Meagher
An important Irish nationalist is from Waterford, Thomas Francis Meagher fought bravelly by the Irish independence. He introduced the current tricolor flag, and there is a sign indicating the exact place where it was raised the first time in Ireland in March, 1848. In a city with a medieval past so present until current days, visiting the Medieval Museum is mandatory.
You will be able to make a tour with a a local guide dressed up with medieval clothing, who will show you the main attractions of the museum such as a 4 meter long parchment showing in drawings important places of the city.
This statue of the Virgin Mary from 1300 AD was made on a single block of oak.
Inclusive um vídeo é exibido no museu mostrando a história destas peças tão raras.

From the 13th Century, Waterford port became the only one in the region to be able to import wine, and for a long time it was considered the Wine's National Capital, and the museum shows in a wine cellar this part of the city's history.
We can also see a little of the medieval day by day.
The museum is very rich and interesting, you will feel like spending several hours there. BISHOP'S PALACE
Another museum is the Bishop's Palace which shows the Georgian period of Waterford, unfortunatelly it was closed on the day we went, so we were not able to see it.WATERFORD CRYSTAL
Waterford is recognized internationally by its luxury crystals factory which we visited, but we will be making an exclusive post showing all the details.PÃO BLAA / BLAA BREAD
Don't leave the city before trying the Blaa bread. Very traditional in Waterford, it is soft and with white flour on top.It is usually in a square shape and it is tasted over breakfast. It is also great on sandwiches.
