Today with the globalized world we find basically the same products and brands in all places. But when I find something different I like to show here at the Welcome to Ireland. And today we will talk about two typical candies that can be found here at the Emerald Island.
One is very traditional, as you can see in the packaging, it looks like a sweet package from the 50s.
It is made here in Cork county, and its name is Glove, precisely because it is made of clove. In the composition there are just a few ingredients: glucose, clove oil, sugar and natural colorant
The texture is extremely hard, don't try to brake one of these candies with your teeth. And the taste is strong, like the flavor of the clove. I didn't like it very much, maybe because not being used to it.
The other candies are more commercial, they can be easily found on the stores and they are the Wine Gums. The origin of these sweets is British but they are very common around here, too.
The consistence is like a jellybean but a little harder, and no sugar on the surface.
The legends tells the creator of these sweets wanted his candies appreciated like a good wine, so he decided to call them Wine Gums, and each candy form would bring the name of a known wine (there are also the name of other alcoholic beverages), as we can see in the pictures:
The strategy worked well and the Wine Gums are traded and appreciated until today.
