A Muralha Marinha - The Sea Wall
With almost Mediterranean temperatures still during Spring in Ireland, we continue giving you tips to enjoy the sun and the heat. And a stroll that can't be missed in Dublin is a walk on The Great South Wall.Se você quiser andar alguns bons quilômetros a mais como nós, pode fazer a trilha no Irishtown Nature Park. Uma tranquila caminhada com a natureza de um lado e imensas faixas de areia e mar do outro da praia de Sandymount.
But even before getting there, let's have a look on the Dublin Bay region, at the Poolbeg Peninsula. If you want to walk a few more kilometers like we did, you can take the Irishtown Nature Park trail. It's a peaceful walk with the nature on one side and huge sand strips and sea on the other, on the Sandymount beach.
You will see from very close the famous Poolbeg Chimneys, installed in a power station which measure a bit more than 207 meters and can be seen from a good part of the city.
The chimneys were shown at the U2 Pride clip (In the name of Love). Have a look and sing this classic song.
And after the chimneys you will find this poster where it is explained a bit of the history from The Great South Wall (also known as the South Bull Wall).
This was one of the longest sea walls in the world, measuring around 4 Km (and continues being one of the longest in Europe), and it was built there to solve the old problem on the bay which was the accumulation of sand banks, making difficult the navigation up to Dublin Port. By building the wall, the problem was basically solved.Ali não há banheiros e você só irá encontrar esta van que vende bebidas frias e cafés, que aliás são deliciosos.
The fresh air and the lovely sea landscape make this stroll a relaxing moment and extremely pleasant. There are no toilets there, and you will only find this van selling cold drinks and coffee - which are actually delicious.
By the middle of the wall is the Half Moon Swimming & Water Polo and you will eventually find some bathers there.
By the end of the wall is the red Poolbeg Lighthouse, build in 1768 and the first in the world to be operated by candlepower (in 1786 it started using oil instead) - after that the lighthouse was rebuilt in it current shape in 1820.Quer dar uma olhada no Dublin Port River Fest ou no Bloom 2016? Ah, que passeio gostoso! Eu trabalhava perto dessa região em 2013/14, e no verão levava às meninas pra praia, de onde víamos essas torres ao longe... como o tempo passa rápido!
