The Dropping Well
The Drooping Well is a pub and restaurant with 170 years of intense history and which is far from the traditional establishments of Temple Bar and Dublin city center, it is situated on the banks of the Dodder River in Milltown (D6).Como o cenário era aterrador, os primeiros donos, que já tinham autorização para vender bebidas alcoólicas, pediram à administra-ção pública para abrir ali também um necrotério. E foi assim que começou o The Dropping Well!
It all started in 1847, at the height of the Great Irish Famine. This dark period in the country's history had begun two years earlier in the country, and more and more hungry and sick people were heading to the capital. As the setting was terrifying, the first owners, who were already authorized to sell alcohol (Off-Licence in Ireland/UK, Liquor Store in the US), asked the public administration to open a morgue there too. And that's how The Dropping Well started!
The owners were very involved with the community at that time, and in an attempt to minimize this terrible tragedy that devastated the country, here were set up some refectories for the hungry people. The time has passed and the establishment has passed through 8 owners. The pub, called Boxer Maher, is named after its second owner who was a sports lover, mainly the boxing, he even mounted a ring in the middle of the pub to practice the sport with customers.
Nowadays, it is a place with a cosy decoration, always with TVs connected to sports channels, and a nice fire lighted on cold days.
If you want to have a meal, the restaurant has ample space with lovely views of the park and the river. Then try to get a table by the window.
The staff is kind and helpful. We decided to order a typical Irish meal. A good vegetable soup with typical bread (soda bread) and butter. As a main course, a delicious and juicy Slow Braised & Guinness Casserole accompanied with mashed potatoes. The dish was very good and we really recommend it. And they bring a very generous portion.
At The Dropping Well you will also be able to have your breakfast, which is served until noon with selections such as full Irish Breakfast, Porridge, Eggs Benedict, fruit salad, omelettes, orange juice, etc. The dishes for lunch and dinner have a wide selection: Irish roast beef, lasagna, roasted chicken, sirloin steak, rack of lamb, vegetarian dishes, salads, among many others. From Mondays to Fridays, 15:00 to 19:00 there is the Early Bird menu: starter, main course and tea or coffee for €20.
After eating so well in such a historic place in Dublin, taking a walk along the Dodder River and taking a look at the traditional rhinoceros statue in the middle of the river might be a good idea.
