Newgrange

Há alguns meses demos uma olhada no mapa da Irlanda e percebemos que já tínhamos conhecido quase toda a ilha! Já visitamos todos os 26 condados da República e 4 dos 6 condados da Irlanda do Norte.  E uma das tantas atrações imperdíveis que os visitantes tem que conhecer é Newgrange, uma incrível tumba funerária mais antiga do que as piramides do Egito e 1 mil anos mais antiga do que pedras de Stonehenge no Reino Unido. 

A few months ago we took a look at the map of Ireland and realized that we had already been to almost the whole island! We have already visited all 26 counties of the Republic and 4 out of the 6 counties of Northern Ireland. And one of the many must-see sights is Newgrange, an incredible funerary tomb older than Egypt's pyramids and one thousand years older than Stonehenge stones in the UK.

Newgrange foi construída entre 3300 e 2900 AC e ficou intocada por mais de 4 mil anos escondida. Foi descoberta apenas no século 18 por algumas pessoas que procuravam pedras. Elas achavam que era uma caverna e foi apenas com o uso de radiocarbono se chegou à conclusão de que se tratava de uma incrível construção de 5 mil anos!

Newgrange was built between 3300 and 2900 BC and remained untouched, hidden for more than 4,000 years. It was only discovered in the 18th century by some people looking for stones. They thought it was a cave and it was only with the use of radiocarbon that they came to the conclusion it was an amazing 5,000-year-old building!

Muito provavelmente foi usado para enterrar reis celtas. Os restos de 5 indivíduos foram achados lá dentro. A tecnologia usada é muito avançada para a época. Foram utilizadas 200 mil toneladas de pedras para a sua construção. E se isso já impressiona, um fato mais significativo faz de Newgrande um lugar sem igual no mundo. O único dia do ano onde o sol entra até o interior é no solstício de inverno, 21 de dezembro e por apenas 17 minutos. Isso demonstra também o enorme conhecimento astronômico que o povo celta tinha já a 5 mil anos. Newgrange faz parte de um grande complexo arqueológico chamado Brú na Boinne (onde também estão Knowth e Dowth) no condado de Meath a uns 40 km de Dublin.

Most likely it was used to bury Celtic kings. The remains of 5 individuals were found inside. The technology used is very advanced for the time. 200 thousand tons of stones were used for its construction. And if that already impresses, a more significant fact makes of Newgrande a unique place in the world. The only day of the year where the sun enters deep inside to the interior is at the winter solstice, December 21st and for only 17 minutes. This also demonstrates the enormous astronomical knowledge that the Celtic people had already 5,000 years ago. Newgrange is part of a large archaeological complex called Brú na Boinne (where there are also Knowth and Dowth) in County Meath about 40 km from Dublin.

Ao chegar ao Centro de Visitantes (onde é cobrada a entrada), um ônibus te leva até Newgrange. Lá chegando você  vê uma espécie de colina. Apesar de ser bem grande, terá que entrar por um corredor bem estreito de uns 18 metros  de comprimento que desemboca numa câmera em formato cruciforme e com um teto de 6 metros. E para os visitantes terem uma ideia de como a luz do sol entra no dia 21 de dezembro por esse estreito corredor a guia acende uma luz. É realmente impressionante. É por esse pequeno buraco onde a luz solar entra.

Upon arriving at the Visitors Center (where the entrance fee is charged), a shuttle bus will take you to Newgrange. There you can see a kind of a hill. Although very large, you will have to enter through a very narrow corridor of about 18 meters long that ends in a chamber in cruciform shape and with a 6 meters high ceiling. And for visitors to get an idea of how sunlight enters on December 21st down this narrow corridor the guide turns on a flashlight. It's really impressive. It is through this little hole sunlight enters.

O solstício de Inverno tinha uma grande importância para os celtas, a gente já falou mais sobre esse tema aqui. É um acontecimento tão importante na Irlanda que a tv mostra ao vivo todo este acontecimento. Veja  no desenho abaixo como isso acontece e a inclinação perfeita do corredor para que o sol possa chegar até o interior da câmera.

The winter solstice was of great importance to the Celts, we have already spoken more about this subject here. It is such an important event in Ireland that local TV shows live this whole event. See in the drawing below how this happens and the perfect angle of the corridor so the sun can reach the inside of the chamber.

Claro que estamos em pleno dezembro na chuvosa Irlanda e muitas vezes o sol não aparece. Então temos que esperar mais 364 dias! É possível dar uma volta pelo local e ver diversas pedras e construções. Há inúmeros mistérios sobre Newgrande que ainda não foram desvendados.

Of course we are in December in rainy Ireland and often the sun does not appear. So we have to wait another 364 days! It is possible to take a walk around the place and see several stones and buildings. There are several mysteries about Newgrande that have not yet been unraveled.

De volta ao centro de visitantes, não deixe de dar uma passada na completa exposição onde há muitas explicações sobre como vivia o povo celta naquela época, dia-a-dia, o que comiam, como se vestiam, onde moravam, como faziam para transportar imensas pedras e uma réplica do corredor e da câmera de Newgrange.

Back in the visitor center, be sure to stop by the full exhibit where there are many explanations about how the Celtic people lived back  then, their day-to-day life, what they ate, how they dressed, where they lived, how they used to carry huge stones and a replica of the corridor and the Newgrange chamber.
