A Verdade Sobre o Boxing Day na Irlanda - The Truth about the Boxing Day in Ireland

How was Christmas this year? Did you celebrate in family? With Friends? Or you just don't celebrate the date?
Alex and I decided to follow an Irish habit, which is going to mass on Christmas Eve at night, which many people know as Midnight Mass. We went to mass at St Peter and St Paul Church which happened at 9PM. The church was in semi-darkness, only with a few lights on, candles on the altar, there was a choir of Gregorian chant, all in Latin (expect for the sermon), and the priest was backwards to the public. Communion was made with the faithful kneeling down to receive it. It was a very intense moment of faith.![]() |
On the way out, rain stopped a little, and we were able to see this beautiful Moon. Full Moon at Christmas, the first since 1977.
We had our supper at home in a very intimate and casual way.
On Christmas it rained all day almost non-stop here in Cork. It is good to emphasize everything close on this date, even stores which call themselves "24 hours" close. You can't even have a coffee. Even the cinema closes.
Então vamos às compras?
On December 26th, it is the St. Stephen holiday in Ireland, and also the great Boxing Day, with after Christmas sales and promotions. This was the first year we spent the date in Ireland, on the previous ones we went to the Netherlands and Brazil. So let's go shopping?

Some stores already open their doors in the early morning, at 6AM. Sometimes some queues are formed, and there is a little rush on the opening of the doors. This is more like a marketing action than any other thing. But pay attention on the opening times of the stores. They open in different times, and some don't even open.
Most of the markets, for instance, remain closed. So do most of the restaurants.

Outra coisa, algumas lojas realmente entram no espirito do Boxing Day e fazem ótimas promoções.
Decide previously on what you want to buy. Otherwise you are going to be a bit lost on the middle of so many promotions. Some stores really get into the Boxing Day spirit and do great promotions. We got a suitcase for €49, which was originally €130!

But most stores do only moderate reductions, which doesn't make any different from normal sales, those that happen along the year. So do some research on the price of things you want to buy. Many stores use the date to get rid of slow moving stock. Be sure that you really want to buy this product.
In general, stores are not full and you choose very calmly, and on the counters the queues were small.
Promotions last for a few days, so don't get desperate to buy everything on the 26th.
Boxing Day is a great opportunity to do some shopping with good prices, but don't fall into the temptation of going shopping desperately for products you don't need.
