Páscoa na Irlanda

No domingo, dia 20 abril, teremos por aqui, assim como em quase todo o mundo, a Páscoa.

Uma diferença com relação ao Brasil é que a oferta de chocolate por aqui é bem mais discreta. Não há aqueles túneis imensos de ovos pendurados que vemos nos supermercados.
Apenas algumas prateleiras e cestas espalhadas pelo mercado.
Uma tradição bem irlandesa (e de outros países também) são os Hot Cross Buns, pães macios e doces com uvas passas na massa e que na superfície têm uma cruz.

On Sunday, April 20th, we will celebrate Easter here in Ireland, as it is also done in most of the world.

One difference in relation to Brazil is that the supply of chocolate here is much more discreet. We don't find here those long tunnels of hanging chocolate eggs we have in Brazilian supermarkets.
Just a few shelves and baskets spread around the market.
A very Irish tradition (and from other countries, too) are the Hot Cross Buns, soft and sweet bread with raisins on the dough and bringing a cross on the surface.

O "Hot" no nome é porque normalmente eles são consumidos recém assados ou tostados. 
Pelo fato de terem um sinal que lembram uma cruz, muitas histórias estão ligadas a este pãozinho.
Uma delas diz que os Hot Cross Buns assados na sexta-feira Santa, não vão estragar até a Páscoa seguinte.

The "Hot" on the name is because they are usually eaten freshly baked or toasted.
Many stories are connected to this kind of bread because they have a sign that resembles a cross.
One of them says Hot Cross Buns baked on Good Friday will not go bad until next Easter.

Algumas famílias guardavam alguns na cozinha para proteção do lar. E outras davam pedaços do pão a pessoas adoentadas.
Compartilhar um pãozinho destes com alguém, garantiria bons laços de amizade com essa pessoa pelo próximo ano. Inclusive há uma frase que se diz e começa assim" Metade para você e metade para mim"...

Some families keep a few pieces of bread in the kitchen for home protection. And others used to give them away to sick people. 

Sharing one of these pieces of bread with someone will ensure good friendship links with this person for the next year. There's even a widely spoken sentence that begins like this: "Half for you and half for me"...

Estes pães estão por todos lados, em cafés, supermercados, confeitarias, etc.

Outra característica irlandesa é o Monday Easter, um feriado nacional em lembrança ao Levante de 1916 conhecido também como a Rebelião da Páscoa. Alguns lideres irlandeses se rebelaram contra a dominação britânica e queriam a Independência. Esse levante ocorreu justamente na semana da Páscoa. A Rebelião foi severamente reprimida, mas foi fundamental para conseguir a independência definitiva do país que viria poucos anos depois, em 1922.

Another Irish feature is the Easter Monday, a national holiday in remembrance of the 1916 Rising also known as the Easter Rebellion. Some Irish leaders rebelled against British rule and wanted the Independence. This uprising took place precisely on the Easter week. The Rebellion was severely repressed, but it was essential to achieve the definitive independence of the country that would come a few years later, in 1922.
