CHRISTMAS PANTO

Desde que chegamos aqui à Irlanda, uma tradição que nos chamou a atenção foi a Pantomima de Natal - Christmas Pantomime ou simplesmente chamada de Panto no dia-a-dia.

Since we first arrived in Ireland, one tradition that really got our attention was the Christmas Pantomime, or just called Panto on the day by day . 

 Quisemos ir algumas vezes para ver no que consistiam mas por diversos motivos só pudemos ir  este ano, no último domingo assistimos no tradicional e lindíssimo Olimpya Theatre a Panto "The Ugly Sisters & Yer Wan".

We have been willing to go for quite a while to see what was it all about, but for several reasons we only managed to go this year, last Sunday we watched on the traditional and beautiful Olimpya Theatre the Panto "The Ugly Sisters & Yer Wan".

Primeiro um pouco sobre a origem deste tradicional tipo de espetáculo. Tudo começou com o teatro ocidental clássico e a commedia dell'arte no século 16 na Itália. Depois, na Inglaterra, sofreu adaptações e como a Irlanda pertenceu ao Reino Unido até 1922 essa tradição foi conservada por aqui também. 

As Pantos geralmente são espetáculos para entretenimento de toda a família baseadas em histórias infantis ou de amplo conhecimento de todos. 

First a little on the origin of the traditional type of performance. All started with the classical western theatre and the commedia dell'arte in Italy on the 16th century. Later, in England, it faced adaptations, and once Ireland belonged to the UK up to 1922, this tradition was kept around here as well. 

The Pantos are usually shows for entertaining the whole family, based in children stories or of wide knowledge from everybody. 

No nossa Panto, por exemplo, foi a história de Cinderela que serviu de pano de fundo. Mas você não vai ver apenas um simples musical. Há um mix muito curioso. As piadas vão desde as mais simples e estilo pastelão até aquelas políticas. Um dos vilões, por exemplo, era o Donald Trump. Numa paródia realmente hilariante. 

Há também brincadeiras com clara conotação sexual e de duplo sentido.E todos curtem o espetáculo desde os bem pequenos até os adultos. Há também muitos números musicais e de dança. Todos muito bem feitos e empolgantes. 

A produção é muito caprichada com muitos efeitos e até "neve"sobre a platéia.

On our Panto, for instance, it was Cinderela's story that was used as background. But you are not going to watch only a musical, there is a very curious mix. The jokes go from the most common ones and slapstick comedies, up to the political ones. One of the bad guys, for example, was Donald Trump, in a really funny parody. 

There are also jokes with a clear sexual connotation and of double meaning. All all enjoy the show,from the small ones to the adults. There are also many musical and dance performances, All very exciting and well done. 

The production is great with many effects and even "snow" has fallen over the audience.

E torça para não ter que participar em algumas partes. Um dos atores faz perguntas ao público e claro, o objetivo ali é ridicularizar tudo e todos......hehehe

Na Panto The Ugly Sisters teve a ilustríssima participação do querido e famoso fantoche  Dustin The Turkey. Este personagem é uma verdadeira instituição por aqui, já  participou durante muitos anos de programas de TV, lançou músicas de sucesso e tem um jeito muito peculiar de se expressar. Não espere delicadezas. O sotaque é forte e difícil de ser entendido por estrangeiros. 

Também teve a participação do conhecido comediante irlandês Al Porter.

And just hope not to participate in some parts. One of the actors asks questions to the audience, and of course, the idea there is to make everything and everybody ridiculous....... hehehe

On the Panto The Ugly Sisters there was the most eminent participation of the beloved and famous puppet Dustin The Turkey. This character is a real institution around here, and has participated during several years on TV programs, released successful songs and has a very peculiar was of expressing himself. Don't wait for delicacies. The accent is strong and hard to understand by foreigners. 

There was also the participation of the famous Irish comedian Al Porter.

Além do Olimpya Theatre,  o Gaiety Theatre aqui em Dublin tem famosas e tradicionais Pantos. Mas claro que elas ocorrem em várias outras cidades. Em Cork, onde já moramos, elas eram muito famosas e as Pantos no The Everyman Theatre estavam sempre lotadas.

Saímos da nossa sessão felizes e com vontade de ir a muitas outras Pantos no futuro.

Besides Olimpya Theatre, Gaiety Theatre here in Dublin has famous and traditional Pantos. But of course they also take place in other cities. In Cork, where we used to live, they were very famous and the Pantos at The Everyman Theatre were always sold-out.

We left our show very happy and willing to go to more Pantos in the future.
