St. Patrick's Day in Belfast
We have been in Ireland for 4 years and a half, and we always enjoy participating on the St. Patrick's Day festivities in different places. And we have already shown you in several posts along these years a little of the largest Irish annual celebration - have a look here, here, here, here, here, here, here. This year we decided to go to the capital of Nothern Ireland, Belfast - and check out the festivities there.
As we got there we went to one of the most typical places in Belfast, which is the St. George's Market, a big warehouse of historical importance with several choices for food, vegetables, handcraft, etc. There was a special agenda with Irish music.
We decided to try The Belfast Bap, this sandwich you can see in the picture with sausage, a lot of bacon and eggs.
We went then to the parade that started with a big figure of St. Patrick expelling the snakes out of Ireland.
Later came the Vikings, Titanic, Irish dance, music. They even had the Star Wars characters, as the latest films were recorded in Ireland, we have already shown some of the places here and here. We loved this peaceful environment of a small city.
The temperatures were very low, around 7 Celsius. After the parade we had to get a bit warm, so we went to the Café Parisien, which is right in front of the City Hall square. It's a plce with a pleasant decoration, delicious crepes and coffee.
In the afternoon the agenda was going to the Custom House Square, where a big stage was set up, and several shows took place. Everything was well organized, with food and drink stalls, etc. We saw some Irish dance presentations, singers, etc. But the cold was extreme. So we had to make our stay shorter than we wanted.
It was a very pleasant day (despite the cold), and we loved to leave the crazyness of Dublin on St. patrick's Day. It was very interesting to see how many young people were drapped with the Irish Republic tricolour flag.
And on the other hand we saw a goup of loyalist making a protest in front of the City Hall with flags from the United Kingom. We learned by the newspapers there was some provocations between the youth with the Irish flag and the loyalistas, but we didn't see anything.
