Ashford Castle - Part 1

A Irlanda está cheia de castelos! Alguns são apenas ruínas perdidas em algum recanto do interior, outras são conhecidas atrações turísticas como a Castelo de Blarney em Cork (aqui) e o Bunratty Castle em Kerry (aqui). 

Ireland is full of castles! Some are just lost ruins in somewhere in the country, others are known tourist attractions such as Blarney Castle in Cork (here) and Bunratty Castle in Kerry (here).

Outros viraram maravilhosos hotéis de luxo e o mais famoso de toda a Irlanda é o Ashford Castle no condado de Mayo, considerado o melhor hotel 5 estrelas da Irlanda. E há pouco tempo foi escolhido o melhor hotel de luxo de mundo pelo Virtuoso ( uma rede das melhores agências de luxo do mundo). 

Others have turned into wonderful luxury hotels and the most famous of Ireland is Ashford Castle in County Mayo, considered the best 5 star hotel in Ireland. And it was recently chosen the world's best luxury hotel by Virtuoso (a network of the world's best luxury agencies).

A gente passou um fim-de-semana neste lugar espetacular. E, claro, te conta tudo. E como há muito para te mostrar, faremos dois posts. Primeiro um pouquinho de contexto histórico. O Ashford Castle foi construído em 1228 por uma familia anglo-normanda. Ao longo dos anos foi mudando do dono até cair nas mãos da familia Guinness por volta de 1850. 

We spent a weekend in this spectacular place. And, of course, we tell you everything. And since there's a lot to show you, we'll do two posts. First a little bit of a historical context. Ashford Castle was built in 1228 by an Anglo-Norman family. Over the years it changed owners until falling into the hands of the Guinness family around 1850.

Os proprietários continuaram mudando e em 1950 ficou mundialmente  famoso pois grandes estrelas de Hollywood se hospedaram nele. O diretor John Ford e os atores John Wayne e Maureen O''Hara (que era irlandesa) ficaram no hotel enquanto filmavam The Quiet Man. Falaremos mais sobre o filme mais adiante. 

The owners continued to change and in 1950 it became world famous because big Hollywood stars stayed in it. Director John Ford and actors John Wayne and Maureen O''Hara (who was Irish) stayed at the hotel while filming The Quiet Man. We'll talk more about the film later.

E por falar em celebridades, estrelas do mundo todo já se hospedaram aqui. Desde Rolling Stones, Brad Pitt, Ronald Reagan, Woody Allen...a lista é quase infinita. Ultimamente o hotel recebeu varias reformas como o novo SPA e sala de cinema. 

And speaking of celebrities, stars from all over the world have already stayed here. Rolling Stones, Brad Pitt, Ronald Reagan, Woody Allen ... the list is almost endless. Lately the hotel has undergone several renovations like the new SPA and movie theater.

Ao chegar, o exterior do hotel já impressiona como você pode ver nas diversas fotos do post. Um senhor com um impecável uniforme nos da as boas-vindas. E nos dirigimos à entrada do hotel para fazer o check-in. 

Upon arriving, the exterior of the hotel already impresses as you can see in the various photos of the post. A gentleman in impeccable uniform welcomes us. And we headed to the hotel entrance to check-in.

O atendimento em toda a nossa estada foi irretocável com funcionários sempre dispostos a te atender. Uma deliciosa bebida estava disponível para dar as boas-vindas e levava frutas, cravo e rum. Havia outros diversos refrescos e água. 

The service throughout our stay was impeccable with staff always willing to assist you. A delicious drink was available to welcome you and it had fruits, cloves and rum. There were several other refreshments and water.

Logo ao lado do hotel é possível fazer um passeio de barco pelo imenso lago Corrib (que faz divisa com Galway e é o maior lago da República da Irlanda). 

Right next to the hotel you can take a boat trip on the immense Lake Corrib (which borders Galway and is the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland).

É um passeio muito bonito que dura em torno de 1 hora e nós tivemos sorte, o dia estava muito ensolarado.  Se o tempo estiver chuvoso o passeio é cancelado. 

It is a very beautiful tour that lasts around 1 hour and we were lucky, the day was very sunny. If the weather is rainy the tour is canceled.

Mesmo que você não esteja hospedado no hotel pode fazer o passeio tranquilamente. É só pagar na hora. Além das belas paisagens o capitão comenta  sobre o local durante todo o trajeto. 

Even if you are not staying at the hotel you can take the tour . Just pay directly when you are boarding. Besides the beautiful landscapes, the captain comments about the place during the entire journey.

Depois do lindo passeio estávamos loucos para dar uma volta pela enorme área que circunda todo o hotel.  Se a sua roupa não for apropriada para caminhar na natureza, não se preocupe, casacos e botas estão disponíveis para os hóspedes.

After the beautiful walk we were crazy to stroll around the huge area that surrounds the entire hotel. If your outfit is not suitable for walking in nature, do not worry, coats and boots are available for guests.

Assim que começamos o passeio reconhecemos o local de uma cena do filme The Quiet Man, aqui ocorreu a cena da pescaria em que o padre cai na água. 

As we begin the tour we recognized the location of a scene from the movie The Quiet Man, here took place the scene of the fishery where the priest falls in the water.

Neste heliponto chegam as celebridades e políticos! No caso do Alex só faltou o helicóptero...hehehe 

Celebrities and politicians arrive in this helipad! In the case of Alex he is just missing the helicopter ... hehehe

Há muitas atividades que você pode aproveitar em Ashford, desde arvorismo,  tirolesa, ciclismo, pescaria, tiro ao alvo, atividades equestres, tênis, golf e muito mais. Uma das mais interessantes que você pode praticar é a falcoaria. 

There are many activities that you can enjoy at Ashford, from tree climbing, zip lines, cycling, fishing, shooting, equestrian activities, tennis, golf and much more. One of the most interesting you can practice is falconry.

A área é realmente muito grande e você teria que ficar hospedado vários dias no hotel para conhecê-la totalmente. 

The area is really quite big and you would have to stay several days at the hotel to fully see everything.

 E não deixe de passear pelo lago e conhecer os jardins como o Tollamn Garden, Walled Garden e o Terrace Garden. Você pode andar livremente por  todos os jardins mesmo não sendo hóspede. Durante os meses de verão é cobrada uma pequena taxa de entrada. Então antes de ir, confira no site ou ligue.

And be sure to stroll around the lake and see the gardens like the Tollamn Garden, Walled Garden and Terrace Garden. You can walk freely through all the gardens even if you are not a guest. During the summer months a small entrance fee is charged. So before you go, check the site or call.

Depois uma caminhada de pelo menos duas horas já queriamos descansar um pouco no nosso quarto. Antes de recebermos as chaves fizemos um pequeno tour guiado por algumas das instalações. 

After a walk of at least two hours we wanted to rest a little in our room. Before we received the keys we had a short guided tour by some of the facilities.

Main Lobby

O lobby de entrada, segundo o funcionário, é uma das áreas mais antigas do castelo e era lá que os Guinness faziam grandes festas. 

The lobby, according to the receptionist, is one of the oldest areas of the castle and it was there that the Guinnesses had great parties.

É um lugar finamente decorado e a partir de agora você vai se sentir  em um museu e se encantar com os lindos quadros, vasos, fino mobiliário, lareiras, mesa para jogar xadrez, etc. 

It is a finely decorated place and from now on you will feel like you are in a museum and will be enchanted with the beautiful paintings, vases, fine furniture, fireplaces, table to play chess, etc.

The Drawing Room

Logo ao lado do lobby principal  está a sala The Drawing Room que  é usada para almoços, conversas com a familia ou simplesmente relaxar olhando a espetacular vista do lago Corrib e os jardins. À noite há música ao vivo. 

Just off the main lobby is The Drawing Room which is used for lunches, conversation with the family or just to relax looking at the spectacular view of Lake Corrib and the gardens. In the evening there is live music.

George V Dining Room

Este é o elegante salão de jantar onde a etiqueta solicita que o seu traje seja social. Aqui também ocorre o café-da-manhã. Os corredores do hotel são uma atração à parte.  Nada é padronizado, cada um tem o seu estilo.

This is the elegant dining room where the etiquette calls for your outfit to be social. Breakfast also takes place here. The corridors of the hotel are an attraction in itself. Nothing is standardized, each has its own style.

Suite 222

A nossa suite era a 222, que ficava entre as suítes que tinham ficado os Kennedy e Ronald Reagan e a esposa.

Our suite was #222, which was between the suites that had stayed the Kennedys, and Ronald Reagan & his wife.

Se até agora você tinha se sentido num lindo e fantástico museu agora a impressão é de estar num verdadeiro castelo. Com uma fabulosa cama com dossel,vista para o jardim, lareira, banheiro com torneiras de prata e todo de mármore....

If until now you had felt in a beautiful and fantastic museum now the impression is of being in a real castle. With a fabulous four poster bed, garden view, fireplace, bathroom with silver taps and all marble ....

Como era meu aniversário o hotel nos proporcionou taças de champagne e alguns souvenirs.

As it was my birthday the hotel provided us with champagne glasses and some souvenirs.

E como o Alex queria deixar a data  mais inesquecivel ainda encomendou previamente um delicioso bolo. 

And as Alex wanted to make the date even more unforgettable, he had previously ordered a delicious cake.

Ficar num lugar assim é realmente uma experiência única e inesquecível. Depois de descansarmos um pouco já era hora do Afternoon Tea que tínhamos reservado.

Staying in a place like this is truly a unique and unforgettable experience. After we rested a little, it was time for the Afternoon Tea we had booked.

Afternoon Tea

O Afternoon Tea é servido  no castelo desde 1868 e desde então essa tradição vem sendo mantida. A sala onde ele ocorre se chama Connaught Room, com uma primorosa decoração.  Lustre com cristais de Donegal, paredes de carvalho e lareira esculpida a mão.

Afternoon Tea has been served in the castle since 1868 and since then this tradition has been maintained. The room where it takes place is called Connaught Room, with an exquisite decoration. Chandelier with Donegal crystals, oak walls and hand carved fireplace.

Antes de se acomodar nas mesas dê uma olhada na fina prataria na sala The Inglennok Room que era usada nos banquetes durante os muitos anos de história do hotel, ali também está a lareira mais imponente do todo o castelo.

Before settling at the tables take a look at the fine silverware in the The Inglennok Room that was used at banquets during the hotel's many years of history, there is also the most imposing fireplace in the whole castle.

Há duas opções  para você degustar o seu Afternoon Tea: a tradicional com chá e a alcoólica com diversos tipos de champagne. A gente não bebe quase nada de álcool então decidimos optar pela clássica, com chá. 

There are two options for you to enjoy your Afternoon Tea: the traditional one with tea and the alcoholic one with several types of champagne. We do not drink much alcohol so we decided for the classic one with tea.

Foi difícil escolher entre tantos chás incríveis.  O Alex foi de Irish Whiskey Cream (não tem bebida alcóolica apenas as notas de Whiskey) e eu Life & Beauty com frutas tropicais e um toque de verbena.

It was difficult to choose from so many amazing teas. Alex tried the Irish Whiskey Cream (no alcohol only whiskey notes) and I tried the Life & Beauty with tropical fruits and a touch of verbena.

Para começar uma espuma refrescante de ruibarbo.
To start a refreshing rhubarb foam.

Depois  vem os sanduíches e os doces. Lindos e deliciosos. 

Then comes the sandwiches and the candies. Gorgeous and delicious.

E ainda viriam os scones recém assados e quentinhos:  o tradicional, com queijo e com frutas e para acompanhar creme de limão, geléia e creme de leite.

And there would still come the freshly baked and warm scones: the traditional, with cheese and with fruits and to follow lemon custard, jam and clotted cream.

É quase impossível comer tudo isso, Então não se envergonhe em pedir para levar. Os garçons fazem isso com muito agrado. Para fechar este Afternoon Tea vem uma caixinha com pequenos chocolates. Você pode curtir estas delícias mesmo se não estiver hospedado. Mas reserve previamente. E com o sabor deste doce momento terminamos este post. Mas não perca a parte dois onde falaremos do café-da-manhã, do SPA, do fabuloso cinema e muito mais!

It's almost impossible to eat all of this, so do not be ashamed to ask to take it. The waiters do this with great pleasure. To close this Afternoon Tea comes a small box of chocolates. You can enjoy these delights even if you are not staying. But book in advance. And with the flavor of this sweet moment we finished this post.
