Galway - part 2
Galway is the main city on the west of Ireland, and it was chosen as the cultural capital of Europe in 2020, one of the most important cultural events in Europe, and it will leave this fascinating city more and more lively than ever! Check here post that we made about it.Eyre Square
The main square of the city is Eyre Square, which is just after the Latin Quarter (old city centre). It was completely renovated in the early 2000s. It is a great space for those who want to rest a bit in a green and well-kept place.
In the square are the flags representing the 14 tribes (most of Norman origin) that dominated the political, social and commercial life of Galway.
This façade also in the square is an old house built in 1627, which was placed here for its historical character. In Eyre Square takes place every year the Christmas fair that we have shown you in this post.Salthill Promenade
No visit to Galway is complete without a walk on the SaltHill Promenade, which for two hundred years was a fishing village, and little by little, summer houses and small inns were being built. It's a pleasant area and we've stayed already in an apartment here.
The whole promenade has an extension of 2 km with beautiful views of the sea.Blackrock Diving Tower
In the same region is this iconic Galway landmark: a diving platform, used only by men up to the 70s of last century, which is very crowded in summer by those who are willing to face the icy Irish sea.Aquarium Galway Atlantaquaria
In Salthill itself you can get to know the complete Galway Aquarium and take a close look at the importance of marine life in the region and in Ireland.Galway City Museum
If you want to know more about the region's rich history, be sure to visit the Galway City Museum (free admission). It is a modern building that shows a bit of archeology, folklore, history, art and natural history of the city. Take a close look at "Hooker", a traditional boat in the area. And you will also have a nice view of the city.
Galway Cathedral
The imposing Galway Cathedral is all made from the typical local stone - limestone, but it is not an old building. It was built in the 60's in the 20th century! It has several different architectural styles. And what most attracts the attention of the visitors is the great dome, inspired by the Il Duomo of Firenze in Italy.Claddagh Rings
Ireland is full of beautiful legends and traditions and one of them comes from Galway - its famous rings. In them we can see three important symbols: two hands holding a heart signifying friendship and love and a crown on top which signifies loyalty. It would have started 300 years ago when some fishermen from the Claddagh area (which is in Galway) were kidnapped by pirates and sold to a Turkish mercenary who was a goldsmith and eventually learned to make jewelry. One of them was so homesick for his beloved in Ireland that he made a ring with the desire to be able to personally deliver it to her. After a few years he managed to free himself, returned and managed to deliver him personally to his bride.- Coroa para dentro na mão direita - quer dizer que o coração da pessoa está disponível.
Depending on how you put the ring will have a different meaning:- Inner crown in the right hand - means that the person's heart is available.
- Crown out on the right hand - that says the person is committed.
- Crown out in the left hand - means that the person has an infinite love for someone and is reciprocal. That's how I wear my ring.
But of course you can wear your ring however you want.
Be sure to visit the many jewelers in the center of Galway to take a look at the rings. And there is even a small museum with some information about the ring. And if I were you, I'd also buy a souvenir ring.Ostras
Galway is known for having the best oysters in Europe and every end of September takes place in the city one of Ireland's biggest festivals, the Oyster and Sea food Festival. There is a complete and varied schedule and the oysters are prepared in several ways. And if you are not lucky enough to attend the festival, there are many options like The Morans of the Weir, which is in Galway Bay.
This restaurant is housed in a friendly cottage (typical Ireland country house) and has been established since 1797 and serves the wonderful local oysters. You will also be able to enjoy a good fish and chips or sea food chowder (creamy seafood soup), among many other dishes.
And remembering that despite its many attractions, Galway is a beautiful city with lots of open and quiet spaces for you to relax and enjoy all the charm that the Irish west has to offer.
