Rose of Tralee

Estávamos fazendo um zapping pelos canais de TV e encontramos ao acaso um programa chamado "Rose of Tralee International Festival".

We were zapping on the TV channels and found by chance a program called "The Rose of Tralee International Festival". 

E vimos que se tratava de um Festival muito tradicional aqui na Irlanda que existe desde 1959.
Tralee é uma pequena cidade do condado de Kerry (sudoeste do país). Em torno de 32 garotas, que devem ter origem irlandesa, (mas não precisam ter nascido no país) se apresentam neste concurso. Mas não é um concurso de Miss tradicional. A beleza aqui é importante mas outros atributos são avaliados como a personalidade. 

And we noticed it was about a very traditional Festival here in Ireland, existing since 1959.
Tralee in a small city in Kerry County (southeast of the country). Around 32 girls, which should have Irish origin (but do not need to be born in the country), make a presentation on this contest. But is is not a traditional Miss contest. Beauty here is important, but other attributes are also evaluated like the personality. 

As garotas não desfilam e não tem que se apresentar em trajes de banho. Elas são entrevistadas pelo apresentador do programa e conversam sobre amenidades. Muitas delas são profissionais como professora, fisioterapeuta, etc. A família sempre está sentada ali na platéia torcendo. No final da conversa algumas fazem uma pequena apresentação artística como cantar, tocar um instrumento ou dançar.

The girls do not go on a catwalk and don't have to dress in bathing suits. They are interviewed by the show host and talk about amenities. Many of them are professionals like teachers, physiotherapists, etc. The family is always there, sitting with the audience and cheering. At the end of the talk, some make a little artistic presentation like singing, playing a musical instrument or dancing.

O nome Rose of Tralee tem origem numa antiga canção de mesmo nome. Um jovem rico teria se apaixonado por uma empregada da família. Ela não quis nada com o rapaz por causa das diferenças de classe. O rapaz viajou pelo mundo e quando resolveu voltar decidido a se casar com ela, soube que a sua amada tinha morrido de tuberculose. Em sua homenagem fez a música Rose of Tralee.
Este ano a ganhadora foi Maria Walsh da Philadelphia (EUA).

The name Rose of Tralee comes from an old song of same name. A young rich man had fallen in love by a servant of the family. She didn't want anything with the boy because of the social differences. The boy travelled the world, and when he decided to return and marry her, he learned his love had died of tuberculosis. In her tribute, he made the song Rose of Tralee.
This year the winner was  Maria Walsh from Philadelphia (USA).

Mas o evento não se resume a escolher apenas a Rosa do ano. Tanto é que dura cinco dias (em 2014 foi de 15 a 19 de agosto). Há um pouco de tudo nos dias de Festival: carnaval, apresentações musicais e circenses, parque de diversões, fogos de artifício, desfile de moda, etc. Confira este vídeo.

But the event can't be summarized in only choosing the Rose of the year. Proof of this is that it takes five days (in 2014 it was from August 15th to 19th). There is a little of everything on the Festival days: carnival, musical and circus presentations, amusement parks, fireworks, fashion show, etc. Check this video.
