The Big Snow Storm in Ireland

Na semana passada a Irlanda enfrentou um das piores tormentas dos últimos 36 anos. Dois fenômenos meteorológicos se juntaram para que isso acontecesse: uma grande frente fria chamada Beast From the East e uma tempestade, que foi apelidada de Emma pelos meteorologistas.

Last week Ireland faced one of the worst storms in the last 36 years. Two meteorological phenomena came together for this to happen: a large cold front called Beast From the East and a storm, which was nicknamed Emma by meteorologists.

Durante 3 dias o país parou! Pouco a pouco as serviços públicos foram sendo interrompidos, o aeroporto de Dublin fechou totalmente tanto para vôos de chegada como de partida. Os hotéis  faziam tarifas especiais para os hóspedes que eram obrigados a permanecer na Irlanda.

For 3 days the country stopped! Little by little public services were being disrupted, Dublin airport closed completely for both arrival and departure flights. Hotels made special rates for guests who were required to stay in Ireland.

Tudo fechou! Escolas, comércio, cinema e os pubs. E se os pubs fecham na Irlanda, a coisa é muito séria. 

Everything was closed! Schools, stores, cinema and the pubs. And if the pubs close in Ireland, the issue is very serious.

As autoridades pediam encarecidamente para ninguém sair de casa, pois as condições eram as piores possíveis. Muito vento, muita neve, pouquíssima visibilidade. A sensação térmica ficou ao redor de 15 graus negativos durante vários dias.

The authorities urged no one to leave the house, for conditions were the worst possible. A lot of wind, lots of snow, very little visibility. The real feel was around minus 15 degrees for several days.

Houve falta de pães e leite! E as prateleiras desses alimentos e de comida pronta ficaram praticamente vazias.

There was shortage of bread and milk! And the shelves for these products and also frozen food were virtually empty.

Felizmente a gente ficou bem em casa, tínhamos comida, água e em nenhum momento faltou energia. Mas em muitas regiões da Irlanda houve cortes de energia elétrica por mais de um dia! 

Fortunately, we got well at home, we had food, water and in no time lacked electricity. But in many parts of Ireland there has been power outages for more than a day!

Em muitos outros lares a água também foi interrompida por problemas nos encanamentos. Temperaturas tão baixas são extremamente raras na Irlanda, então muitos encanamentos não estão preparados.

In many other homes the water was also interrupted by problems in the pipes. Such low temperatures are extremely rare in Ireland, so many pipes are unprepared.

Foi muito curioso ver como uma tormenta durava tanto tempo!!!  Vários dias onde sair até a sacada era uma verdadeira odisseia. À noite o céu ficava muito claro. 

It was very curious to see how a storm lasted so long !!! Several days when even going to the balcony was a real odyssey. At night the sky was very bright.

Nas nossas pouquíssimas saídas víamos um pouco de alegria nas ruas. As pessoas estavam realmente curtindo tanta neve e brincavam como crianças fazendo guerrinhas de bolas de neve e montando bonecos! A gente também tentou fazer um. Mas não é fácil manipular a neve.

In our very few strolls we saw a little joy in the streets. People were really enjoying the snow so much and playing like children, doing snowball fights and making snowmen! We also tried to make one. But it is not easy to handle the snow.

E diz a tradição que depois de uma grande tormenta sempre sai o sol! Mas não na Irlanda! Ainda estávamos enfrentando os problemas da tormenta Emma e a previsão do tempo já estava emitindo novos boletins sobre fortes chuvas e possibilidade de inundações nos próximos dias......é o tempo irlandês voltando à sua normalidade sem termos direito a nenhum único dia de sol depois de enfrentarmos a pior tormenta das últimas décadas. 

And the tradition says that after a big storm the sun always comes out! But not in Ireland! We were still facing Storm Emma's problems and the weather forecast was already issuing new reports on heavy rains and possibility of flooding in the next few days ...... it is the Irish weather returning to its normality without us being entitled to a single day of sun after facing the worst storm of the last few decades.
