A Brave Irish Woman

 Este ano se completam os 20 anos da morte de uma jornalista que mudou a história recente da Irlanda.



This year it is remembered the 20th anniversary on the death of a journalist who changed the recent history of Ireland.

Veronica Guerin foi assassinada em plena luz do dia enquanto dirigia a seu carro no dia 26 de junho de 1996.
Ela é considerada uma heroína na Irlanda e todos se lembram o que faziam naquele no dia em que foi brutalmente baleada.
Na década de 90 os índices de criminalidade eram altos em Dublin e muito pouco era feito a respeito. Os traficantes de drogas transitavam livremente.
As passeatas contra os traficantes tinham pouquissima adesao popular.
Foi necessário o trabalho destemido  de denúncias e investigação de Guerin para que as coisas começassem a mudar.
Todo o esquema de intrigas e corrupção eram tão grandes que inclusive o IRA estava envolvido.
Mas nada fez esta mulher extraordinária parar.

Veronica Guerin was murdered on daylight while she was driving her car on june 26th, 1996.
She is considered a hero in Ireland and everybody remembers what they were doing on the day she was brutally shot.
On the 90s the criminality rates were high in Dublin, and very little was done to change. Drug dealers walked freely. Marches against drug dealers had very little popular presence.
It was necessary Guerin's brave work of denouncements and investigations so things started to change.
All the scheme of intrigues and corruption were so big, even IRA was involved.

But nothing made this extraordinary woman to stop.

Sofreu um atentado em sua casa, foi baleada na perna e até terrivelmente espancada por um grande traficante local.  Veronica não tinha nenhum tipo de segurança.
Recebeu terríveis ameaças por telefone, ela tinha um filho pequeno.
Mesmo sofrendo as piores violências, continuou firme.
Depois de seu assassinato os políticos resolveram mudar as leis do país. Milhares de pessoas (finalmente) foram às ruas para exigirem mudanças. Os níveis de criminalidade caíram muito. E isso se deve a apenas uma única admirável e corajosa mulher.
Esta estátua em memória da jornalista está nos jardins do castelo de Dublin.

She suffered a murder attempt in her house, she was shot in the leg and even terribly spanked by a local drug dealer. Veronica didn't have any kind of special security.
She got terrible threats over the phone, she had a small child.
Even getting the worst violences, she kept steady.
After her murder the politicians decided to change the laws of the country. Thousands of people (finally) went to the streets to demand changes. Criminality levels felt down considerably. And all of this is due to this single admirable and brave woman.

This statue remembering the journalist is on the gardens of Dublin's Castle.

Um filme  (de 2003) foi feito contando a sua vida, Veronica Guerin ( O Valor da Coragem no Brasil). Quem faz o papel protagônico é a atriz Cate Blanchett.

A film (2013) was made telling her story, Veronica Guerin. The main role was played by the actress Cate Blanchett.
