O Altar Druída - The Druid Altar

Today Welcome to Ireland takes you to the bronze age!
We are going to visit Drombeg Stone Circle, also known as the Druid Altar (which was the highest social class in the Celtic society, in charge of religious rituals), one of the finest Bronze Age stone circles in Ireland. Estes círculos de pedra eram usados para rituais, cerimônias e enterros.
Last century on the '50s diggings found bones of a your person. Studies indicated the age of this human remains would be from the end of the bronze age. These stone circles were used for rituals, ceremonies and burials.

Originally there were 17 stones standing, today only 13 are left, which are meticulously organized, making an almost perfect circle of 8.3 meters. The circle was made on an inclining land on purpose.
And nothing there is on random, the circle has a two meter high horizontal stone which is guided in such a way that on the winter solstice (December 21st) the sun shines at the altar.

Some people take advantage to make certain offerings on the center of the circle, such as the St. Brigid's Cross (read more here) and even money.
A círculo fica numa região alta e a vista é muito bonita.
Many people feel a certain magnetism while being on the center of the circle. This is probably due to the fact the region has an underground aquatic current, which offers a kind of natural terrestrial magnetism. But some people will rather believe there is a certain magic on the place. The circle is located on a high region and the view is very nice.

A few meters from Drombeg there are archaeological ruins known as the Fulacht Fiadh and Hut Site which would be the equivalent to a rustic kitchen and a well.

Studies show on this place it was possible to boil 318 liters of water in only 18 minutes. Meat was cooked in this water and kept warm for at least 3 horas. Not bad considering we are at the Bronze Age!
Visiting places like this, so well preserved, is a magnificent opportunity to witness a little of the culture, customs, history and religion of ages so remote and rich.
The Drombeg Stone Circle is located on West Cork, around 70 Km from Cork City (and around 320 Km from Dublin), close to the town of Glandore. The entrance is free and study well the map before, because getting there is a little complicated.
