Cobh é uma pequena cidade portuária que fica muito próxima à cidade de Cork. Sempre que vamos usamos o serviço de trem (para conhecer a estação clique aqui).

Cobh is a small harbour town which is very close to Cork City. Whenever we go there, we go by train (to learn about the station click here).

Embarcação para Spike Island / Boat to Spike Island

Em menos de 20 minutos você já está em Cobh, conhecida como a última parada do Titanic. Neste post falamos mais sobre esta adorável cidade. No Kennedy Pier em Cobh você pode pegar uma pequena embarcação  até Spike Island, conhecida por alguns por ser a Alcatraz Irlandesa por ser uma ilha e ter servido como prisão por alguns anos.

In less than 20 minutes you will be in Cobh, known as Titanic's last port of call. On this post we spoke about this lovely town. On Kennedy Pier in Cobh you can take a small ferry to Spike Island, known by some as the Irish Alcatraz once it is an island and for being used as a prison for a few years.

Chegada a Spike Island / Arrival on Spike Island

Mas Spike Island teve diversos usos nos seus incontáveis anos de história. No período neolítico já havia assentamento de pessoas morando por lá que viviam de pesca e caça basicamente. No período medieval  havia um pequeno monastério. Até que 300 anos depois os religiosos foram atacados pelos Vikings. Já no século 12 foram os normandos os que invadiram a pequena Spike Island.
Mas durante a maior parte de sua história foi usada com fins militares. Primeiro pelos britânicos e a partir de 1938 passou a pertencer ao governo irlandês. Hoje está aberta a visitação pública de abril a outubro.

But Spike Island had several uses on its countless years of history. On the neolithic age there was already a settlement of people, living basically on fishing and hunting. On the medieval age, there was a small monastery. At least up to 300 years later, when the religious people were attacked by Vikings. On the 12th Century it was the Normans who invaded the small Spike Island.

But along most of its history, it was used for military means. First by the British, and from 1938 on,  it was transferred to the Irish government. Today it is open to public visitation from April to October

Você pode andar ao redor de toda a Ilha. O que é um passeio muito interessante e com belas paisagens e  encontrará cartazes com explicações históricas, geográficas e ambientais da região.
You can walk around the whole island, which is a very interesting stroll, and with lovely landscapes. You will find posters with historical, geographical and environmental explanations on the region.

Depois você poderá ver celas usadas pelos presos no período que foi uma prisão e alguns dos prédios e armas do período militar. Veja este prédio abaixo.  O Último andar é "falso". Não havia nada nele, apenas concreto. Em caso de um ataque aéreo os outros andares ficariam praticamente intactos.

After you can see the cells used by prisoners on the period it was a prison, and some of the building and weapons from the military period. Have a look at this building below. The upper floor was "fake". There was nothing on it but concrete. In the event of an air attack, the other floors would be essentially intact.

Há uma cafeteria com diversos lanches e sanduíches.
E fique atento ao horário do retorno do barco! Pois não há hospedagens na Ilha.

There is also a coffee shop with several snacks and sandwiches. And stay alert for the ferry return schedule! Because there are no accommodations on the island.
