Waterford Crystal
Waterford is the oldest city in Ireland and Welcome to Ireland has already taken you there for a stroll, click here and follow all the post. There is located the fine crystal factory, the House of Waterford Crystal.
The history on the factory goes back to 1783 when George and William Penrose started to make the first units of fine crystal which soon started to have a worldwide prestige. The factory closed in 1851. In 1947 it was reopened and since then the company has many ups and downs but today it is active and melts more than 750 tons of crystal a year. Quality continues the same since then, and they have received several international awards. The crystal of Waterford is used in many big sport events to make the trophies.
On Waterford city center you can make a guided tour in the factory, which is a fascinating adventure to see how one of the best crystals in the world is made. And to guarantee this exceptional quality, the units are made basically the same way as they were made centuries ago, in a manual and extremely hard working way as you will see on the following pictures. The professionals working in every step on manufacturing the units are real artisans on the art of crystal making.
As we arrived a little earlier, we went to the Crystal Cafe which offers good choices of food, sweets and coffee.
The tour starts in a small museum, where the guide explains a little on the history of the factory, and soon we go to a room where several screens show some prizes/awards and the famous ball used on New York New Year festivities, which was made in Waterford - 2688 crystals were used.
No The Mould Room você verá os moldes de madeira que são utilizados para formar as peças. É claro que é uma madeira especial mas devido às altíssimas temperaturas os moldes tem de ser refeitos uma vez por semana.
Then we go inside the factory and you will be able to follow every detail from very close.
At The Mould Room you will see the wood molds used to shape the units. Of course it is a special wood, but due to the extremely high temperatures the molds need to be remade once a week.

Later we see the part called blowing where the crystal, which can reach 1300 C is blown. It is a fascinating technique and it is almost hypnotic to see the professionals giving share through their blow to that burning mass that looks like fire. Amazing.
All that is manufactured there goes through a careful quality inspection, the non-approved material is melted to be used again.
If all is OK the units can go to an area called Sculpting, where refined artisans meticulously sculpt every detail. these artisans have to practice along many years to get to this level of precision.
This unit was given to the then President of the United States Barack Obama.
Of course by the end of the tour you will have a stroll at their store! they have have very beautiful pieces and a bit expensive.
So let us know - what crystals are your favorite?
