Winter Solstice in Ireland

Vamos começar o ano de 2017  no Welcome to Ireland falando de uma milenar tradição Celta que é a comemoração do Solstício de Inverno, que ocorre no dia onde há menor incidência de luz solar no hemisfério norte, 21 de dezembro.

Let's start 2017 at Welcome to Ireland talking about a millenial Celtic tradition, which is the Winter Solstice celebration, happening on the day where there is the shortest incidence of sunlight on the Northern Hemisphere, December 21st.

 Alguns lugares sagrados na Irlanda como Newgrange tem grande relação com o solstício de inverno, tanto é que apenas no dia 21 de dezembro os raios solares podem entrar nas partes internas da antiga construção que tem mais de 5 mil anos e que são mais antigas que as pirâmides do Egito.

Some sacred places in Ireland like Newgrange are much related to Winter Solstice, to the extension it is only on December 21st that sunlight can get in the internal parts of the old building, with more than 5 thousand years - which are even order than Egypt's pyramids.

Segundo os celtas nesta época do ano o "Pai Sol"se encontra com a "Mãe Terra"e é neste momento de escuridão que podemos parar para refletir sobre nossas vidas e aproveitar para um novo recomeço, já que a escuridão é um convite à meditação e introspecção. É um ótimo momento também para repensarmos novos desafios, metas e sonhos.

According to the Celtics, on this time of the year "Father Sun" meets "Mother Earth" and it is on this dark moment we can stop to think about our lives and even use for a new beginning, once the darkness is an invitation to the meditation and introspection. It is also a great moment to rethink our challenges, goals and dreams.

A gente participou do último Winter Solstice realizado pela prefeitura de Dublin e foi uma experiência extremamente interessante. 

We participated on the latest Winter Solstice organized by Dublin's City Hall and it was a really interesting experience.

As atividades começaram no final da tarde, em torno das 18:00, com Story Telling, música e dança irlandesas. 
Também era possível fazer uma espécie de coroa com folhas, (que fazia parte dos preparativos de antigamente) e escrevia num pequeno papel desejos, preces ou alguma frase importante para você. Todos eles eram amarrados à coroa de folhas.
O desfile começa com um pequeno ritual e uma fogueira é transportada até o local onde será queimado tudo aquilo que foi escrito nos  papéis.

The activities started by the end of the afternoon, around 6PM, with Story Telling, Irish music and dance. 
It was also possible to make a kind of crown with leaves (which were part of the preparation on the old days) and write on a piece of paper some wishes, prayers or some important statement for you. They are alll tied to the crown of leaves.
The parade starts with a small ritual and a fire is transported until the place where everything written on the pieces of paper will be burned.

O desfile era  ao som de tambores e diversas figuras coloridas.
Depois de uma caminhada de uns 10 minutos chegamos à praça de Smithfield e se falou da importância de se manter vivos eventos como esses. Chega a hora da queima dos pedidos e preces ao fogo. 
Foi tudo bastante rápido mas significativo. Onde tantos irlandeses como não irlandeses puderam participar de uma celebração antiga mas que pode servir perfeitamente para os dias de hoje onde esquecemos a importância de manter-nos conectados às fases da natureza.

The parade was made at the sound of the drums and several colorful characters.
After a 10 minute walk we arrive at Smithfield square, and it was spoken on the importance of keeping alive events like this. The time to burn the requests and prayers arrives.
It was all very quick but meaningful, where both Irish and non-Irish could participate of and old celebration, but which has a meaning still today, when we forget the importance of keeping ourselves connected to the periods of the nature.
