George Boole - O Pai da Informática Moderna - The Father of Modern Computing
Blog Bilíngue / Bilingual Blog
Boole pode ser considerado o pai da atual programação de informática já que tudo o que fazemos nos computadores se baseia neste mecanismo desenvolvido por ele.
When you look for something on the Internet on Google, there is a mechanism behind this search called Boolean algebra (schemes of basic statements using a binary arithmetic), name that comes from George Boole, extraordinary mathematician who was born in England but developed all his studies here in Cork at UCC (University College Cork).Boole can be considered the father of the current computer programming once everything we do on computers is based on the mechanism he developed.
This week was celebrated his 200th birthday, and even Google honored him through their doodles, showing how the Boolean algebra works.Boole era de origem muito humilde com pouca educação formal e auto-didata.
Boole was a brilliant personality who had talent both on humanities (he spoke fluently 6 languages) as well as on math. His masterpiece called "An Investigation of the Laws of Thought" didn't have any repercussion on the academical environment, and over 70 years passed until another mathematician rescued its huge importance.Boole had very humble origins, with very little formal education and self-taught.
He was married to Mary Everest, niece of the famous topographer who was honored with the name of the highest mountain on the world. As Boole spent most of his academic life at UCC, the university paid many tributes to him, as well as lectures.
A free tour can be made on a daily basis where a guide explains a little about UCC history and the importance of George Boole. This is a program you can't miss, because it is extremely interesting. The tour happens from Monday to Friday at 3PM, and on Saturdays as 12 o'clock. The explanation starts outdoors, showing some of the particularities of the architecture.
Later we started to see some of the important classrooms like the Aula Maxima.
A curiosity here, these nails tied to the wood are placed like this so the pigeons will not use the university as a perch.
Oops... and on the corridors of the University who do we find? "George Boole" himself telling us a little about his life!
And at UCC Alumni Association Room, who is waiting for us to have some tea? No one less than "Queen Victoria" herself, to give us some historical context from the time.
The tour also goes through the current UCC classrooms.
And it finishes with a visit to Crawford Observatory.
This is the house in Cork where George Boole lived and wrote "An Investigation of the Laws of Thought", unfortunately in a very bad preservation state.
On this other post we show a little more about UCC.
