TIMOLEAGUE ABBEY - Ruínas do século 13 - Ruins from the 13th Century

And today we will take you to Timoleague Abbey, who is next to the small village of Timoleague,  48 Km from Cork City.

Ali você visitará incríveis ruínas de um mosteiro que foi construído em meados do século 13 por freis Franciscanos, durante os séculos foi sofrendo vários ataques e reformas.

You will be visiting incredible ruins of an abbey built on the middle of the 13th Century by Franciscan friars (monks), along the centuries it received several attacks and renovations.

Há partes que são da época da sua construção e outras de séculos posteriores.
Aqui foi escrito um livro medieval importantíssimo, o Book of Lismore escrito em pele de animais e que tem inestimáveis informações sobre santos irlandeses St. Patrick, St, Brigida e St. Columba e sobre o dia-a-dia de mosteiro. Ficou perdido durante séculos e felizmente foi encontrado no Condado de Wexford em 1814.

There are parts from the age of its construction, and others from later centuries.

Here is where a very important medieval book was written, the Book of Lismore, written in animal skin and which has priceless information about the Irish Saints: St. Patrick, St, Brigid and St. Columba - and about the abbey's day by day. It was lost for centuries, and fortunately it was found on county Wexford in 1814.

Em 1642 foi terrivelmente atacado e destruído pelas forças britânicas lideradas pelo sanguinário Cromwell.
Muitas características da arquitetura original ainda estão lá e podem ser apreciadas pelos visitantes.

In 1642 it was terribly attacked and destroyed by the British forces lead by the bloody Cromwell.
Many features from the original architecture are still there and can be appreciated by visitors.

Algumas placas indicam onde teriam sido certas áreas da abadia e do mosteiro como a sacristia, a biblioteca e o poço d ´água.

Some signs point to where certain areas from the abbey and friary were, like the sacristy, library and the water well.

Timoleague Abbey fica às margens do Rio Arigideem e você pode inclusive aproveitar as mesas de picnic que há por ali.

Timoleague Abbey is on the banks of Arigideem river, and you can even enjoy the picnic tables you will find there.

O cemitério continua sendo usado, é fácil encontrar muitas lápides de séculos passados e algumas modernas.
A entrada é gratuita. Em Timoleague Abbey você sentirá a força de séculos passados que infelizmente foram perdidos nos inúmeros ataques que a Irlanda sofreu ao longo de sua história.

The cemetery is still in use, it is easy to find many tombstones from previous centuries, and more modern ones.

Entrance is free. At Timoleague Abbey you will find the force of past centuries which unfortunately were lost on the several attacks Ireland suffered along its history.
