Passeando por Limerick - Taking a Stroll in Limerick
Limerick is the capital of the same name county, on Ireland's southwest, on the banks of River Shannon.
And as most of the cities in the country, it has a long history. It was at first conquered by the Vikings on the IX century. Another 3 centuries and the Normans arrived. Later it was sieged by Cromwell's British forces. One of the main attractions in town is by sure John's King Castle, but we will do exclusive post showing the Castle in details. Now we will see other attractions on this town, which combines in an interesting way its medieval past and a renewed cosmopolitan air.
Limerick was a walled city. These are the ruins of the wall built in 1237.
On the banks of River Shannon is the Treaty Stone, where the Limerick treaty would have been signed, which re-established Peace in the region. Before this use, this rock was used by the people to go up and down from their horses.
One of the museums in town is the Hunt Museum, with a great collections of art and antiques from the Neolithic until the XX centurty.
This is the front of Frank McCourt Museum, American writer who spend all his very poor childhood in Limerick. McCourt wrote an emblematic book about Ireland: Angela's Ashes - and he won the Pulitzer prize for it.
Sculptures and street art around the streets of Limerick.
On Milkmarket you will find quality food from local producers. It is worth a stop for getting something to eat.
St. Mary's Cathedral is the oldest building in Limerick still in use. It was built in 1168!
On the distance you can see the modern Rugby stadium, Thomond Park.
Let's finish our stroll in one of the green spaces in town, the People's Park.E depois de caminhar tanto, que tal terminar o passeio uma refeição típica?
It is good to remember on county Limerick was born one of the most traditional drinks in the country, the Irish Coffee. We have already shown you how everything started on this post. And after walking so much, how about finishing the stroll with a typical meal? In Ireland the Full Irish Breakfast line the photo below is served all day long in several pubs and restaurants.
