As Tower Houses na Irlanda / Tower Houses in Ireland
The Tower Houses are a real symbol in Ireland. Countless tower houses were built between 1450 and 1650. Many are totally abandoned, and we can only see the ruins. Others are standing and strong until today, as it is the case of Dunguaire Castle (in Kinvara, County of Galway). And despite the name, it is not a proper castle as we are used to see, it is a fortified tower rounded by walls.
Dunguaire was never used for military purposes. It was built in 1520, and it has always been used as a residence. On that time the rich Irish families built these Tower Houses for living in security. The inspiration for this type of housing was probably brought from the continental Europe, there are similar buildings in Italy, Germany and France.
Dunguaire Castle was occupied by the O'Hynes, descendants of the Guaire King. After this is was owned by Richard Martyn, Galway's Mayor. Martyn's descendants kept the Tower House until the 20th Century. In 1924 it was purchased by Oliver St. John Gogarty, famous surgeon and literary character, who was part of the Gaelic literary renaissance movement on the 19th Century. We spoke more about it aqui.
Gogarty wanted to have his own Tower, like the write W. B. Yeats did. Welcome to Ireland has already shown Yeats' Tower House on this post. Neverthless, Gogarty never lived in Dunguaire. Finally, in 1964, it was acquired by Christobel Lady Ampthill who used it as his home. The last floor was reformed to be her atelier and reading room. The furniture was kept.
The tower house ground floor was used for storing food like fish and salty meat, besides wine and water barrels. It thick walls made the internal temperature stable during the whole year.
Barrels and baskets used in the past for storing beverages and salty meat.
The second floor is used for medieval banquets, and Welcome to Ireland is going to show it in details on its next post.
Around Dunguaire there was a dense vegetation (which no longer exists), and large bog lakes, type of valuable coal which was used as fuel for many years in Ireland. We have explained the bog in details on this text.
