Gur Cake - Doce Típico Irlandês - Typical Irish Pastry
Blog Bilíngue / Bilingual Blog
On the 19th century, bakers from Dublin decides to reuse bread left-overs and old cakes, this was the origin of Gur Cake.
This is a pastry which has two thin layers of dough, the thick stuffing is dark made basically of dehydrated fruits such as raisins and plums.
The name can vary, it is also known as Chester Cake, Gudge or Donkey's Gudge.
This is a pastry which became very popular among the working class, because it was very cheap. It was sold for just a few cents. Today it is found in all markets. It is usually sold in rectangles, as we can see in the pictures below. Veja nestes posts pães típicos da Irlanda. Clique aqui e aqui.
We always enjoy tasting novelties, and with Gur Cake it wasn't any different. But the flavor was not very good according to our taste. This dough of fruits has a very strong flavor. But of course, taste is something very subjective. Have a look at these posts of Irish typical bread. Click here and here.
