A Grande Fome e os Navios Caixão - The Great Famine and the Coffin Ships

Um dos piores períodos na história da Irlanda foram os anos de chamada Grande Fome. A partir de 1845 o principal alimento da população, a batata, foi atacada por uma terrível bactéria. Os irlandeses entraram num longo período de fome, doenças, morte e emigração. 

One of the worst periods on the Irish history were the years of the Great Famine. From 1845 onwards, the major kind of food from the population - the potato - was attacked by a terrible bacteria. The Irish started a long period of famine, diseases, death and emigration.

Pelo menos 1 milhão de pessoas morreu de fome.
Esses anos foram tão negros que mudou para sempre a vida cultural, social e política do país. É considerada como uma das maiores catástrofes demográficas na Europa do século 19.
Nesse cenário devastador sugiram os Navios Caixão que levavam irlandeses a outros países como EUA, Austrália e Nova Zelândia. Pelo nome dessas embarcações já dá para imaginar em que condições as pessoas viajavam!!! Normalmente eram navios de carga e que também transportavam emigrantes. O espaço era mínimo, condições de higiene péssimas, pouquíssima comida....mas era isso e tentar uma vida melhor em outro país ou morrer de fome na Irlanda.

At least 1 million people starved to death. These years were so bad that they changed forever the country's cultural, social and political lives. 
It is considered one of the biggest European demographic catastrophes from the 19th century.
On this devastating scenario, appeared the Coffin Ships, which took the Irish to other countries like the USA, Australia and New Zealand. By the nickname of such ships you can imagine the conditions people travelled!!! They were usually cargo ship which also transported immigrants. Space was minimum, terrible higiene conditions, very little food... but it was either this, or starving to death in Ireland.

Uma réplica desses navios pode ser visitada em Dublin nas Docklands (já falamos sobre essa região no Welcome to Ireland, clique aqui para conhecê-la). É o Jeanie Johnston, considerado como o "good ship" pois em suas 16 viagens em direção aos EUA, nenhum passageiro faleceu! O que realmente é quase um milagre! 

A replica of these ships can be visited in Dublin on the Docklands (we have already written about this region on Welcome to Ireland, click here to see it). It is the Jeanie Johnston, considered the "good ship" because in its 16 trips towards the USA, no passenger died! This was a real miracle!

Na parte de baixo do navio o guia conta histórias reais e emocionantes de alguns dos emigrantes. Tudo está reconstituído como o navio estava à época. Parte o coração ver gente tão humilde, crianças, velhos, grávidas sofrendo tanto. Mas visitar o Jeanie Johnston é uma verdadeira aula de história sobre a Irlanda

On the tour of the ship, which takes almost an hour, a guide explains all the political, historical and economical context of the time. On the lower part of the ship the guide tells real emotional stories of some immigrants. All is reconstituted as the ship was at the time. It breaks your heart to see people so humble, children, elderly, pregnant - all suffering a lot. But visiting Jeanie Johnston is a real history class about Ireland.
