January Blues

O primeiro mês do ano foi bastante difícil com condições climáticas  complicadas. Já no começo de janeiro tivemos algumas inundações, vindas ainda das tempestades de 2015. Veja abaixo algumas imagens do Fitzgerald Park aqui em Cork.

The first month of the year was very difficult with complicated weather conditions. On the beginning of January we already had some floods, still coming from the 2015 storms. Have a look at some images from the Fitzgerald Park here in Cork.

As tempestades não deram trégua. Foram várias no mês: Jonas, Gertrude, Henry....e com elas vinham condições climáticas severas como ventos fortes e chuvas intensas. E todos os inconvenientes que esse tipo de tempo traz. Estradas interditadas, inundações, cortes de luz, etc.


The storms didn't give any rest. We had several along the month: Jonas, Gertrude, Henry... and together with them would come severe weather conditions like strong winds and intense rain. And all the inconvenience this type of weather brings: restricted roads, flooding, electricity cuts, etc.

Nas duas primeiras semanas fez muito frio, em algumas partes da Irlanda chegou a nevar. Mas o que trouxe muitos problemas foi a formação de camadas de gelo nas ruas e estradas chamado de black ice, que na verdade é transparente e muito perigoso, pois é muito fácil escorregar e cair. Os hospitais colapsaram recebendo pacientes com diversas doenças típicas da época, como resfriados, tosse e febre, e também muitos casos de pessoas que se machucaram com o gelo formado nas ruas.

Não é a toa que este mês há o chamado January Blues (Janeiro Triste), um período pós festas de fim-de-ano em que as pessoas ficam bastante deprimidas pois o clima está péssimo, as contas do Natal começam a aparecer e temos de voltar às atividades normais como trabalho e estudo depois de alguns dias de folga em dezembro. On the first two weeks it was very cold, and in some parts of Ireland it even snowed. But what brought more problems was the formation of ice layers on the streets and roads, called back ice, which is in fact transparent and very dangerous, once it is very easy to slip and fall. Hospitals collapsed  receiving patients with several illnesses typical from the season, such as colds, cough and bad temperature, and also many cases of people who got injured with the ice formed on the streets.
It is not at random that this month is the so called January Blues, an after parties period in which people get very depressed because the weather is terrible, bills from Christmas start to arrive, and we have to go back to regular activities such as work and study after a few days off in December.
