An Authentic Irish Festival

Os ruivos ou gingers (ou foxy pelo tom avermelhado desses animais) como são chamados aqui é a cor de cabelo mais rara do mundo. A Irlanda tem a segunda maior porcentagem de gingers do mundo, 10% da população é ruiva. A Escócia é a primeira com 13%. E aqui na Ilha Esmeralda tem um festival para a celebração dos ruivos, trata-se do Annual Irish Redhead Convention. Ouça esta canção que celebra o encontro.

The red-haired or gingers (or foxy due to the red color of those animals) as they are called here is the most rare hair color in the world. Ireland had the second largest percentage of gingers in the world, 10% of the population is red-haired. Scotland is the first with 13%. And here on the Emerald island there is a festival for the celebration of the gingers, it is the Annual Irish Redhead Convention. Listen to this song celebrating the meeting.

Tudo começou em 2010 quando dois irmãos ruivos tiveram a ideia de comemorar o seu aniversário convidando apenas ruivos e colocando elementos avermelhados na decoração. O sucesso foi grande e apareceram 350 pessoas. De lá para cá tudo aumentou muito de proporção e a convenção que ocorre todos os anos na pequena aldeia costeira de Crosshaven no condado de Cork (a gente já fez um post mostrando algumas atrações de Crosshaven aqui)  recebe visitantes de toda a Irlanda e de vários outros países.

It all started in 2010 when two ginger brothers had the idea of celebrating their birthdays inviting only redhead people and placing red elements on the decoration. The success was so big and 350 people showed up. Since then the convention really  increased in size, and the convention taking place every year at the small coastal Town of Crosshaven on county Cork (we have a post showing some attraction of Crosshaven here) receives visitors from all Ireland and from several countries.

Quando moramos em Cork, tivemos a oportunidade de ir a uma dessas convenções.

São escolhidos o rei e a rainha da festa! E também diversas outras categorias como a melhor família ruiva, melhor barba ruiva, cabelo ruivo mais longo, pele de porcelana mais clara, maior número de sardas por metro quadrado, melhor avó ruiva, etc.

Vários músicos ruivos tocam durante todo o evento.

E são feitas algumas atividades como cabo-de-guerra entre gingers e não gingers. 

Também há espaço para algumas palestras como a identidade cultural dos ruivos e cuidados com a pele já que  são muito propensos a desenvolverem câncer de pele devido ao tom muito pálido da pele. Uma parte do dinheiro arrecadado na convenção é destinado para a Sociedade Irlandesa de combate ao câncer.

When we lived in Cork, we had the opportunity to go to one of these conventions. They choose the king and the queen of the festival! And they also choose several other categories, like the best ginger family, best ginger beard, longest ginger hair, brightest porcelain skin, largest number of freckles by square inch, best ginger grandmother, etc.

Several ginger musicians play during the event. 

And some activities like tug-of-war between gingers and non-gingers.

There is also a space for lectures on the ginger's cultural identity and care with the skin once they are prone to develop skin cancer due to the very bright skin. part of the money collected at the convention goes to the Cancer Irish Society.

É bem interessante ver as diversas tonalidades de ruivo todas juntas. Uns vão mais para o alaranjado, outras para o vermelho, outras para o loiro. Todas lindas.

It is very interesting to see the several shades of red together. Some are close to the orange, other to the red, a few to the blond. They are all great.

Na verdade tudo é isso tem o objetivo de valorizar  a identidade ruiva dos irlandeses que por algum motivo (que desconheço) geralmente não são tidos como parâmetros de beleza admiráveis.

O que acaba, muitas vezes, trazendo problemas de auto-estima.

O grand finale do evento é um desfile com todos os gingers presentes.

The whole idea has the objective to add value to the Irish ginger identity which for some reason (which I do not know) are usually not seen and a beauty standard parameter. 
And this problem many times bring self-esteem issues to them.

The event's great ending is a parade with all the gingers present.
