AVOCA - WICKLOW
A gente já falou um pouco sobre a Avoca neste post e há alguns dias conhecemos o lugar onde tudo nasceu, no condado de Wicklow.
Avoca is one of the oldest companies still in business in Ireland, and the oldest weaving mill in the country dating from 1723. We have already written a little on Avoca on this post and a few days ago we went to the place it all started, on county Wicklow.
Avoca Valley was a prosperous town and a big mining region on the 18th century. In 1723 sheep owner farmers created a cooperative where they would be able to meet and weave products with the wool they would get from the sheep. In the beginning it was all rustic and in raw/unbleached tones.
Around 1800 Nicholas Dunne acquired the weaving mill and started to develop it in a higher scale and to dye their products with a vegetable based dye. But the big development of the company happened from 1923 with the futuristic and entrepreneurial view of 3 sisters, the Wynne Sisters, who started having a global recognition.
They developed the quality of their products considerably, and managed to sell them even to the United Kingdom royalty, and to high fashion stores in Paris.
After the sisters passed away, Avoca almost went bankrupt, but thanks to Hillary and Donald Pratt who purchased the company in 1974 it is firm and strong. And up until recent days it is managed by descendants of the Pratt couple. And going to the small town of Avoca you can still visit the old weaving mill and see the inside. There are loads of information on how all the process works.
The whole place around the weaving mill is charming.
There is also a small coffee shop, and of course, the store with the products sold by the company. Something very nice is that the environment here is much more easygoing and relaxed than on the other stores which are always busy and full of people.
Avoca's HQ is also on county Wicklow but in Kilmacanogue (near Bray). There the store is huge and very complete.
They have several choices of food for you to take home and two restaurants - one for quicker meals and the other is a beautiful one called Fern Garden, which has a view to the garden.
Besides, for those who like gardening you can't miss this store. There are dozens of choices on plants and flowers on sale.E se você for até a Avoca onde fica a tecelagem, no próximo post a gente vai te passar duas ótimas opções de passeios ali por perto.
Visiting this Avoca is a very pleasant experience, it is impossible not to get charmed with all kinds of quality products, decoration, foods of all types. There the butches has the best cuts of meat, a bakery with a varied choice of bread types, a wide offer of fine wines. In summary, it is a wondeful place that must be visited. And if you go to the Avoca where the weaving mill is, on our next post we will give you two options of touring in the region.
