Kilemore Abbey
Kilemore Abbey is the most similar place to a fairy tale we ever visited. Charming, magical and with an astonishing beauty. It is on county Galway on the West of Ireland (280 Km from Dublin).
When you go (and I hope one day you visit this paradise) take your time there. Kylemore Abbey deserves to be appreciated very calmly. It is not everyday you can visit a place with such an incredible beauty.Henry então comprou 15 000 acres de terras e assim começaria a construção do castelo que é dos maiores cartões postais da Irlanda.
It all started around 1850 when the couple Mitchell Henry and his wife Margaret were spending their honeymoon in the region, and she was so charmed by the place she told her husband she would love to live there. Henry then purchased 15,000 acres of land and thus started building the castle which is one of the most important postcards of Ireland.
The couple had 9 children, and 4 years after the construction of the Castle the couple decided to make a trip to Egypt. Margaret got severely sick and died in just 16 dias. Henry was devested and in her honor built a Neo-Gothic mini-cathedral and a mausoleum.
In 1903 the castle was sold and went through several owners.
Up until 1920 when it became the home for the Benedictine Sisters after their abbey in Belgium was destroyed during the first World War. There they opened a reputed boarding school for girls and started to restore what is now the Abbey, as well as the church and the sumptuous gardens.
The Boarding School was closed in 2010, but the religious women still live in the Abbey, reason why only a few rooms are opened for visitation.THE VICTORIAN WALLED GARDEN
Near the visitor center you will find this place, where you get a shuttle that will take you to the Victorian Walled Garden.
But I sincerely advise you not to do it. The way to the garden is gorgeous and you will not feel the approximately 25 minute walk. Besides the nature you will enjoy sculptures and even some musical instruments!
The Victorian Walled Garden was built at the same time as the castle, it is one of the last Victorian gardens in Ireland, and at a time it had 40 gardners.
Things didn't go really well for many years, and the Benedictine Sisters made a big effort to restore it. All this work was rewarded even with international prizes. You will be able to visit the Glass Houses, a rocky area called Rockery, the herbal gardens, medicinal gardens, fern gardens and even visit the Master Gardener House which was at the top so we could keep an eye on all that happened in the garden.TEA ROOM
Next to it is a lovely Tea Room, with an amazing view to the mountains. Make a stop to enjoy a good cup of coffee and to have a scone. If the weather if pleasant, you can have your food at the outdoor tables.KILEMORE ABBEY
To go back we decided to make the route on foot again.
As you enter Kilemore Abbey you can watch a video explaining the history of the place and visit some rooms. You can feel a little of the luxury and the good taste of their former owners.NEO GOTHIC CHURCH AND MAUSOLEUM
The Church is considered to be to be a "mini cathedral". It is really charming and it makes you impressed with the beautiful details. Close by is the Mousoleum Henry also built for the eternal rest of his wife.WOODEN FINGERS
Don't miss this odd sculpture called Wooden Fingers, where a giant hand appears to be coming out of the ground.
Before leaving you can still buy some handcrafts and even a Liquor bearing the name Kilemore Abbey.
A few Kilometers from there is the Connemara National Park which we already showed you in details on this post.
It is time to go, it is almost the sunset. But there is still time take the last picture.
