As Ovelhas Coloridas da Irlanda - The Colourful Sheeps in Ireland

Assim como o trevo de 3 folhas e os duendes Leprechauns, um dos símbolos da Irlanda é a ovelha. Então sempre que você for a lojas de lembranças vai achar muitos objetos com simpáticas ovelhas estampadas. Há de tudo: camisetas, canecas, meias, chaveiros e até guarda-chuvas!

As well as the shamrocks and the leprechauns, one of Ireland symbols is the sheep. So whenever you go to the souvenir stores you will find many objects with nice sheeps stamped on them. You have it all: T-shirts, mugs, socks, keyrings and even umbrellas.

São criadas nas pastagens verdejantes da Ilha desde tempos remotos.

They are raised in the island's green pastures since remote times.

Elas fornecem lã para roupas bem quentes, leite para beber e fazer os seus derivados como queijos. A sua carne é usada no prato típico nacional o Irish Stew.

They supply wool for very warm clothes, milk for drinking and making its sub-products like cheese. Its meat is used on the typical national dish, the Irish Stew.

Há o dobro de ovelhas do que de habitantes no país!! É muito fácil encontrá-las pastando em todos os cantos, basta sair um pouco dos centros urbanos.
E uma característica que chama a atenção é o fato de muitas delas terem manchas coloridas, como as que vemos no post.

The number of sheeps in the country is the double of its inhabitants!!! It is very easy to find them grazing in all places, you just have to get out of the urban centres.

Há muitas piadas para explicar essas manchas. Uma delas diz que é para separar as ovelhas protestantes das católicas! (hehe)
Mas o fato é que elas têm essas marcas coloridas por um motivo bastante prático: como costumam pastar todas juntas, na hora de apartá-las cada fazendeiro sabe qual é o seu animal.

There are many jokes to explain these spots. One of them says it is for differentiating the protestant and catholic sheeps (hehehe)!!!
But the fact is that they have these colorful spots for a very practical reason: once they graze all together, at the time of putting them apart, each farmer will know which which sheep is his/hers.
