EM NOME DO PAI - IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER

No mês passado morreu o irlandês Gerry Conlon, que ficou mundialmente conhecido após o seu livro "Proved Innocent" ter sido levado às telas através do diretor também irlandês Jim Sheridan, o filme é Em Nome do Pai (1993), quem interpretou Gerry foi o brilhante Daniel Day Lewis.

Last month the Irish Gerry Conlon died, who was globally known after his book "Proved Innocent" being taken to the screens through the also irish Jim Sheridan, the movie is In the Name of the Father (1993), and who interpreted Gerry was the brilliant Daniel Day Lewis.

Gerry Conlon foi injustamente acusado de ter participado de um atentado do IRA  (Exército Republicano Irlandês).
O atentado ocorreu em um Pub nos anos 70 em Guilford, arredores de Londres.

Gerry Conlon was unfairly accused of having participated on an IRA (Irish Republican Army) attack. The attack took place in a Pub in the 70s in Guilford, around London.

Por esse crime que não cometeu, Conlon passou 15 anos na cadeia. As irregularidades no processo foram tão aberrantes que o primeiro ministro Tony Blair se viu na obrigação de pedir desculpas pela "terrível experiência e injustiça" à familia e ao próprio Conlon.

For this crime he didn't commit, Conlon spent 15 years in jail. The irregularities in the process were so abnormal, that Prime Minister Tony Blair was forced to apologize for the "terrible experience and injustice" to the family and to Conlon himself.

Outra figura emblemática nesta história foi o pai de Conlon, Giuseppe, que lutou com todas as suas forças para provar a inocência do filho mas que morreu preso (foi acusado de colaborar com o atentado!) em 1980.
Muitas das cenas de Em Nome do Pai foram filmadas na prisão Kilmainham Gaol, em Dublin e que está aberta a visitação.

Another emblematic character in this story was Conlon's father, Giuseppe, who fought with all his forces to prove his son's innocence, but died in prison (he was accused of collaborating with the attack!) in 1980.
Many of the movie scenes from In the Name of the Father were recorded at the prison Kilmainham Gaol, in Dublin - which is opened for visitation.

Gerry Conlon morreu aos 60 anos, vítima de câncer.

Visiting this prison is really worth because it is a real Irish history class. It is possible to make guided tours.
Gerry Conlon died of cancer at 60 years old.
