Rock of Cashel, (94 Km from Cork and 165 Km from Dublin, also known as St. Patrick's Rock (County Tipperary) is one of the most important historical places in Ireland!
Para chegar até lá você precisa ir até o povoado de Cashel e vai a pé até o Rock que fica numa colina.
This was the place where the kings of Munster lived (region formed by 6 counties: Kerry, Cork, Limerick, Clare, Tipperary and Waterford) since the 4th century. Here Saint Patrick would have converted the kings of Munster to the Christianism.

There are building from different centuries which have been going through remodelling for several decades, as we can see in some photos there are scaffoldings for the restoration. Once you enter you already watch a video that tells a little about the long history of the place, and after you go on a small tour with a guide.
Uma réplica da cruz está no lugar onde estava originalmente, do lado de fora.
On the small museum, don't miss the Saint Patrick Cross, which dates back from the 12th Century. It has a hollow core. There are many legends about it, said to even have healing powers.

Queen Elizabeth II visited Rock of Cashel in 2011. The first visit to the place by an English monarch after 900 anos.
The biggest construction of all is the Saint Patrick's Cathedral, which was built from 1235 to 1270 in gothic style. It is very deteriorated. It was the stage of a terrible massacre which took place in 1647, where hundreds of people were murdered by order of the Earl of Inchiquim during an attack.
The Cormac Chapel was built from 1127 to 1134 by the king of Munster Cormac Mac Carthaigh, and it is one of the very few leftovers of the Romanesque style in Ireland, it is full of unique details. Many devices try to remove the humidity in the place to preserve the decoration with the original frescos, some made in blue shades with lapis lazuli, so rare at that period that it was more expensive than gold.
The Round Tower (built around 1100) is believed to be one of the oldest structures at the Rock of Cashel. It is 28 metres high and is found at an incredible state of preservation.
The Vichars Choir (15th Century). It is finely decorated as it would have been originally! This room was used for support services to the cathedral. It is possible to see furniture, decoration and details. Even the roof was made again as it was made on the medieval time.
After visiting so many amazing buildings, take a stroll on the cemetery surrounding the Cathedral. Once it is a high place you will enjoy the lovely landscape. One curiosity, the cemetery is still used for burials. But only a few descendants of relatives buried there can choose Rock of Cashel as their last residence.
