BROOKLYN and STEVE JOBS

Este ano Hollywood resolveu indicar diversos filmes com atores e profissionais da indústria do cinema irlandeses para o Oscar. No último post (clique aqui) falamos do maravilhoso Room, que está concorrendo em 4 categorias.

Mas também há outros dois filmes com irlandeses que foram lembrados pela Academia: Brooklyn e Steve Jobs.

This year Hollywood decided to point several movies with Irish actors and professionals from the cinema industry to Oscar Awards. On the last post (click here) we spoke about the wonderful Room which is running on 4 categories. But there are another two movies with Irish people which were remembered by the Academy: Brooklyn and Steve Jobs.

BROOKLYN

Este filme (em co-produção com os EUA e Canadá) tem direção de John Crowley (nascido em Cork) e é baseado no livro de Colm Tóibín, nascido em Enniscorthy, (condado de Wexford) mesma cidade onde se passa parte do filme. A história trata um um tema tão tipicamente irlandês que é a migração. No elenco está a protagonista Saoirse Ronan, que nasceu no Bronx (EUA) pois os seus pais irlandeses tinham justamente acabado de emigrar para as Estados Unidos. Uma história muito parecida com a do filme, que mostra uma jovem irlandesa indo para a América para tentar uma vida melhor. Este é aquele momento onde a ficção se entre cruza com a realidade.

This movie (in co-production with the USA and Canada) has the direction of John Crowley (born in Cork) and it is based on the book from Colm Tóibín, born in Enniscorthy (county Wexford), same town where part of the movie takes place. The story deals with a very typical irish subject which is the migration. On the cast is the leading actress Saoirse Ronan, who was born in the Bronx (EUA) because her Irish parents had just emigrated to the USA. A very similar story to the one in the movie, which shows a young irish girl going to America to try having a better life. This is the moment where fiction crosses with reality.

Saoirse voltou com os pais para a Irlanda ainda pequena e começou a sua carreira de atriz numa canal local  fazendo alguns papéis em séries médicas. Ainda adolescente começou a despontar para o sucesso e fez um memorável papel no filme Desejo e Reparação (Atonement) em 2007, e concorreu ao Oscar de atriz coadjuvante com apenas 13 anos. Saoirse went back to Ireland while she was still a child and started her actress career in a local channel doing some roles in medical series. Still a teenager, she started to head to success and did a memorable role in the movie Atonement in 2007, and ran for the actress in a supporting role Oscar when she was only 13. Outro papel marcante de Saoirse é o de Susie em Um Olhar do Paraíso (The Lovely Bones) adaptação do best-seller de mesmo nome. Aqui ela interpreta uma adolescente que é brutalmente assassinada mas continua observando do além a vida dos seus amigos, familiares e tenta de alguma forma que o seu assassino seja preso.


Another important role Saoirse had was Susie at The Lovely Bones, adaptation from the same name best-seller book. Here she interprets a teenager who is brutally murdered but continues observing from the afterworld the life of their friends, relatives, and tries somehow to make her killer being arrested.

Em 2014 fez o papel da adorável confeiteira Agatha em O Grande Hotel Budapeste que concorreu ao Oscar de Melhor filme naquele ano.

In 2014 she did the role of the adorable confectioner Agatha in The Grand Budapest Hotel, which ran for the Best Movie Oscar Award in that year.

Em Brooklyn está tão bem no papel de Eillis que não consigo imaginar o filme com outra atriz. Saiorse vem recebendo inúmeros elogios e prêmios e está concorrendo ao Oscar de melhor atriz.


In Brooklyn she is so well on Eillis role I can't imagine the movie with any other actress. Saiorse has been receiving  several compliments and she is now running for the best actress Oscar.

STEVE JOBS

Steve Jobs como já indica o nome aborda a vida do co-fundador da Apple, é um filme norte-americano mas quem faz o papel do protagonista é o ator Michael Fassbender que tem dupla cidadania alemã e irlandesa. Michael passou boa parte de sua infância na Irlanda no condado de Kerry, onde seu pai tinha um restaurante.

Steve Jobs as the name gives out, goes through the life of Apple's co-founder, it is a North American film but who does the leading actor role is the actor Michael Fassbender who has German and irish double citizenship. Michael spent good part of his youth in Ireland in county Kerry, where his father had a restaurant.

Há vários anos Fassbender tem tido uma carreira de sucesso em Hollywood. Mas não deixa de fazer filmes mais alternativos como Frank (filme que a gente citou no último post), que apesar de atuar com uma máscara foi muito elogiado. Antes de conhecer o estrelato já começou a sua parceria com o diretor Steve McQueen com quem fez Hunger, abordando uma temática bem irlandesa, um grupo de presos políticos liderados por Bobby Sands (interpretado por Fassbender) faz uma greve de fome reivindicando que o governo britânico reconheça o IRA como partido político.

Fassbender has had a successful career for many years already. But he doesn't stop doing more alternative movies like Frank (movie we mentioned on our last post), which despite acting with a mask was very praised. Before becoming a star he started his partnership with the Director Steve McQueen with whom he did Hunger, approaching a very Irish subject, a group of political prisoners lead by Bobby Sands (interpreted by Fassbender) goes on hunger strike claiming the British government to recognize IRA as a political party.

Fassbender começou a se destacar para o grande público quando fez Bastardos Inglórios de Quantin Tarantino. Em X-Men First Class faz um Magneto memorável.

Fassbender started to get famous for the greater public when she did Inglourious Basterds from Quantin Tarantino. In X-Men First Class he did a memorable Magneto.

Shame foi o segundo filme em que o diretor Steve McQueen e Fassbender fizeram juntos. Aqui o ator interpreta um jovem viciado em sexo, atuação novamente muito elogiada e inclusive lhe rendeu uma indicação ao Globo de Ouro de melhor ator.

Shame was the second movie the director Steve McQueen and Fassbender did together. Here the actor interprets a young man addicted in sex, again a very praised acting, which gave him an indication for the Gold Globe of Best Actor.

Com 12 Anos de Escravidão (12 Years a Slave) viria a terceira parceria com McQueen, o filme acabou ganhando o Oscar de melhor filme em 2013 e Fassbender faz o papel de um dono de escravos.

With 12 Years a Slave would come the 3rd partnership with McQueen, the movie ended up winning the best movie Oscar in 2013 and Fassbender did the role of a slave owner.

No papel de Steve Jobs, Michael Fassbender faz uma interpretação que é baseada em diálogos, alguns criticaram a falta de "ação" do filme. Mas na minha opinião a atuação de Fassbender é excelente pois faz um Steve Jobs onde toda a sua genialidade e excentricidade é mostrada de forma sutil e brilhante. Muito merecida a indicação ao Oscar de melhor ator! O filme se centra em 3 anos específicos na vida de Jobs, 1984, 1988 e 1998, sempre antes de uma grande apresentação de seus produtos.

On the Steve Jobs role, Michael Fassbender had an interpretation based on dialogues, some criticized the lack of "action" on the movie. But in my opinion, Fassbender's acting is excellent because he makes a Steve jobs where his geniality and eccentricity is shown in a very subtle and brilliant way. It was well deserved the indication of best actor Oscar! The movie is centered in 3 specific years on Jobs' life - 1984, 1988 and 1998, always before the great presentation of his products.

On February 28th Welcome to Ireland will be cheering for Brooklyn, Room and Steve Jobs getting their golden statues!
