O novo filme da série Star Wars - The Force Awakens ( O Despertar da Força) tem batido todos os recordes de público desde que foi lançado em dezembro do ano passado. O Alex e eu estávamos esperando por esse filme há muito tempo.

The new Star Wars - The Force Awakens movie has been breaking all records of public since it was released last December. Alex and I have been anxiously waiting for it for a long time.

O Alex por que adora a série. Eu não sou tão fanática assim mas estava muito curiosa para ver como seria mostrada uma das locações do filme que foi feita aqui na Irlanda, uma minúscula ilha que se chama Skellig Michael (patrimônio Histórico da Humanidade pela Unesco há 20 anos). 

A gente tinha algumas dúvidas: será que vão mostrar tão rápido que nem vamos notar?  Ou será que vai estar tão cheia de efeitos especiais que vai parecer qualquer outro lugar? Bom, nossas dúvidas foram solucionadas quando fomos ver o filme. O grand finale é em Skellig Michael e é mostrada exatamente como ela é! Com toda a sua beleza e esplendor.

Alex was anxious because he loves the series. I am not so fanatic, but I was very curious to see how they would show one of the movie locations here in Ireland, a tiny island called Skellig Michael (Unesco's Humanity Heritage for 20 years already).
We had some doubts: will they show it so quickly we are not even going to notice? Or would it be so full of special effects it will look like any other place? Well, our doubts were solved when we watched the movie. The grand finale was at Skellig Michael and it is shown exactly as it is! With all its beauty and glory.

To arrive at The Skellig Michael Experience you need to go to County Kerry (southwest of Ireland, dark green on the map).

Uma vez em Kerry terá ir até a pequena mas encantadora Valentia Island que fica conectada pela ponte Maurice O'Neill Memorial Bridge.

Once in Kerry you need to head to the small but enchanting Valentia Island which is connected to mainland by the Maurice O'Neill Memorial Bridge.

Logo que você atravessa a ponte já encontra o centro de visitantes e o estacionamento.

As soon as you cross the bridge, you will find the visitor's center and the parking lot.

Veja que são duas ilhas na verdade, a maior e mais conhecida e outra muito pequena ao lado.

You will see they are actually two islands, the bigger and most known, an another very tiny one next to the first.

Por volta do ano 600 um mosteiro foi construído ali com pedras. O objetivo dos monges era ficar num lugar extremamente afastado e de difícil acesso. Tanto é que primeiro você tem que subir uma imensa e desnivelada escadaria para chegar às pequenas "casas" que são como iglus mas feitos de pedras e que ficam a mais de 200 metros do solo. Around 600 AD a monastery was built there with rocks. The monks' objective was to be in an extremely remote and difficult access place. To get there you first need to climb an immense and unlevelled stairway to reach the small "houses" which look like iglus but are made of rocks and are more than 200m high. Check on the pictures below the Star Wars movie character climbing these stairs.

Como dá para imaginar, a vida dos monges ali era árdua e muito austera. Mas era exatamente isso o que eles queriam. Viver em condições quase extremas e isolados de tudo, para assim desenvolver o lado religioso e espiritual.

As we can imagine, life of the monks there was hard and very strict. But this was exactly what they wanted. Living in almost extreme conditions and isolated of everything, so they could develop their religious and spiritual side.

No Skellig Michael Experience você vai achar diversas maquetes mostrando como era a vida dos monges.

At Skellig Michael Experience you will find several maquettes showing how the live of the monks was.

Por volta do anos 800 a ilha começou a ser brutalmente atacada por Vikings, que como bons mercenários que eram procuravam objetos de valor. Obviamente não achavam nada mas arrasavam com tudo. Os ataques foram se sucedendo até que Skellig Michael  (que significa Rocha de Miguel) deixou de ser utilizada como mosteiro após a quarta invasão em torno do ano 840.

Around 800 AD the island started to be brutally attacked by Vikings, which as good mercenaries were looking for valuable objects. The obviously didn't find anything, but destroyed all. The attacks continued until Skellig Michael  (which means Rock of Michael) was no longer used as a monastery after the fourth invasion around 840 AD.

No Centro de Visitantes você também vai encontrar detalhes sobre pássaros da região, vida marinha e até informações sobre o farol que entrou em funcionamento por lá no ano 1826.

At the Visitor Center you will also find details on the birds of the region, sea life and even information about the lighthouse which started to work there in 1826.

Um vídeo também é exibido mostrando lindas imagens deste lugar incrível e que foi escolhido para ser o cenário de um dos filmes mais vistos de todos os tempos.

They also show a video with lovely images of this incredible place, which was chosen to be the scenery of one of the most watched movies of all times.

Há também uma cafeteria e uma pequena loja onde, claro, podiam ser compradas camisetas que remetiam ao filme.

There is also a coffee shop and a small store, where, of course, you could buy T-shirts related to the film.

E é ali que você pode comprar tickets para o barco que te levará a Skellig Michael. Mas esses passeios estão sujeitos às condições climáticas e quando fomos a chuva e o vento não permitiram que conhecêssemos pessoalmente a ilha.

And it is there where you can get the tickets for the boat taking you to Skellig Michael. But these trips are subject to weather condition and when we went there the rain and the wind didn't allow us to personally visit the island.
