BLARNEY CASTLE

O Castelo de Blarney é uma das maiores atrações aqui de Cork, fica a apenas 8 KM do centro da cidade. Há muito para ser visto lá, como os seus lindos jardins que a gente já mostrou aqui e aqui. Hoje vamos falar sobre o Castelo.

Blarney Castle is one of the most important attractions here in Cork, it is only 8 Km from the city centre. There is a lot to be seen there, like their beautiful gardens which we have already shown here and here. Today we are going to talk about the Castle itself.

O prédio que vemos hoje já é a terceira edificação construída no local. A primeira foi erguida nos anos 1210 e era de madeira. Esta que vemos foi construída em 1446 pelo Rei de Munster, Dermot McCarthy. Munster é uma histórica província irlandesa situada ao sul (hoje sem funções administrativas) que compreende 6 condados: Cork, Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, Kerry e Waterford.
Mas voltando ao castelo, que é conhecido principalmente pela Blarney Stone que fica no topo do castelo e diz a lenda que beijá-la concederia o dom da eloquência!!

The building we see today is the third edification built in the place. The first was around 1210 and it made of wood. This one we see was built in 1446 by the King of Munster, Dermot McCarthy. Munster is a historic Irish province located in the south (currently without any administrative duties), which is composed by 6 counties:
Cork, Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, Kerry and Waterford. But returning to the Castle, it is mainly known by the Blarney Stone, which is on the top of the castle, and the legend says that by kissing the stone, it would grant you the gift of eloquence.

This story got so famous that nowadays most of the people forgets about the rest and only wants to kiss the stone!!!
So if this is your case, arrive early, otherwise you will have to face long lines/queues.

From far you already start noticing the castle, you walk through beautiful and well taken care gardens:

Na entrada há estes bonitos bancos de madeira.

In the entrance you find these beautiful wood benches.

Para chegar ao topo você terá que subir 100 degraus por estreitas escadas de pedras irregulares.

To arrive on the top you will have to climb 100 steps through narrow irregular stone stairs.

Ao chegar lá, você tem esta vista do castelo.

When you get there, you have this view of the castle.

E tem um senhor sentadinho esperando os visitantes para ajudar a beijar a Pedra de Blarney. A posição é bastante incômoda: tem que deitar e ficar com a cabeça para trás e para baixo. Para não cair há barras de ferro. Acompanhe o Alexsandro dando o seu beijo na pedra:

And there is an old man sitting there just waiting for the visitors in order to help them to kiss the Blarney Stone. The position is very uncomfortable: you have to lay down and get your head back and upside down. To avoid falling down there are iron bars to hold. Check Alexsandro kissing the stone:

Beijo dado, agora você pode se dedicar ao resto do castelo que tem séculos de história para ser contada.
Este, por exemplo, é o Murder Hole (buraco assassino).

Kiss given, now you can devote your time to the rest of the castle, which has centuries of history to be told.
This one, for example, is the Murder Hole.

Se algum visitante indesejado chegasse ao castelo, por ele eram jogadas lanças, pedras e até óleo fervente, afugentando o invasor.
Estes buracos eram comuns e podem ser vistos em vários outros castelos.

If any unwanted visitor arrived at the castle, through this hole they would throw spears, stones and even hot oil, scaring away the invader.
