A Irlanda tem enfrentado nos últimos anos um dramático problema social: o alto número de suicídios de adolescentes masculinos. Isso se deve ao fato dos meninos terem perdido o referencial que possuíam antigamente. 
Antes esta era uma sociedade basicamente patriarcal. Agora não é mais. As meninas vem estudando mais e com o passar do tempo isso resultou numa mudança de comportamento e valores. Hoje as meninas são mais decididas, independentes e conseguem melhores empregos. 

Ireland has faced in the last years a dramatic social problem: The high number of masculine teenager suicides. This is due to the fact boys have lost the referential they had in the past. Before this was a basically patriarchal society. But it is not anymore. Girls have been studying more, and as time goes by, this resulted in a change of behaviour and values. Today girls are more decided, independent, and manage to get better jobs.

Os rapazes ficaram perdidos com todas essas mudanças e com isso muitos ficam deprimidos, chegando muitas vezes ao suicídio. Toda esta trágica situação vem preocupando as autoridades e várias ações vem sendo tomadas como a criação de grupos de ajuda e apoio. É neste contexto que surge a figura de Donal Walsh.

Some boys are getting lost lost with all these changes and because of this they get depressed, many times leading to suicide. All this tragic situation is making authorities concerned, and several actions have been taken such as the creation of help and support groups. It is in this context that we find the figure of Donal Walsh.

Um adolescente que nos últimos 4 anos de sua vida lutou bravamente contra o câncer. Uma carta sua foi divulgada num jornal daqui e dizia que ele mesmo estando com uma doença terminal lutava com todas as forças que tinha para se manter vivo. Que o suicídio nunca era uma solução. Que a vida é um presente divino e que devemos lutar por ela até o fim.

He is a teenager who in his last 4 years of life bravely struggled against the cancer. On of his letter was revealed in a local newspaper around here,  and said even though he had a terminal disease we fought with all the strenght he had to keep himself alive. He said suicide had never been an option. Life was a divine present, and must fight for it until the end.

Desde então este menino é um  verdadeiro símbolo na Irlanda na luta contra o suicídio. No dia 12 de maio se completa um ano de sua morte e ele pediu aos pais que sua mensagem continuasse viva e forte mesmo depois de ter ido embora. O pai escreveu um livro chamado " Donal´s Mountain -How One Son Inspired a Nation"contando a comovente história do filho.

Since then his boy became a true symbol in Ireland against suicide. On May 12th, 2014, it was the 1st year of the day he passed away, and when alive he asked his parents that his message continued alive and strong even after he had left. His father wrote a book called "Donal's Mountain - How One Son Inspired a Nation", telling his son's touching story.

Ele estará autografando livros hoje (5 de maio), na cidade natal da família, Tralee (condado de Kerry) que fica há uns 100 KM  aqui de Cork. Antes de morrer, aos 16 anos, Donal ainda teve forças para arrecadar 50.000 euros para o hospital onde fazia o tratamento contra o câncer.

 His father was autographing books (last May 5ht), at the family's hometown, Tralee (Kerry's County), which is around 100 Km from Cork). Before dying, aged 16, he still had strength to raise funds of around €50,000 for the hospital where he had the treatment against the cancer.
