Blennerville Windmill - Maior Moinho da Europa - Highest Windmill in Europe
Blog Bilíngue / Bilingual Blog
The highest windmill in Europe (over 21 meters high) is located in Ireland, in a small town called Blennerville, a little over 1 Km from the city of Tralee on County Kerry.
Visiting it is one of those delicious pleasures the countryside of Ireland offers you, and which Welcome to Ireland takes you to pay a visit.
The windmill was built in 1800 with the objective of milling grains, mainly wheat. As soon as you enter on the visitor center you watch a video on the history of the place and there is a small museum where it shows the importance of the wheat in Ireland, and also its main sub-products like soda bread (we have already spoken about this typical bread here). Potato Bread (here) and Barm Brack (here).
During several years this windmill kept in activity and it was very important for the region. As time goes by it fell into disuse and it went into ruins.
But this was until 1981 when the Urban District of Tralee decided to buy it, and it was renewed with the help from the population.
The visitors have total access to all the interior of the windmill which is divided in many floors. Each level makes a certain part of the milling. On the ground floor we can already see the bags of grains. And on this floor there wasn't any machinery.
Through a little staircase you climb to the upper floors.
On the first floor there is an access to a deck from where you can have a great view of the region.
As you go up, you start finding the heavy duty machinery. Even being rustic everything works perfectly.
As you leave the windmill, you will find a railway station in miniature. It is a charm, and very well done.
On Blennerville Windmill you will find a small souvenirs shop, a coffee shop, and if you are lucky with the weather, a picnic area.
Details on the opening times and prices can be found here.

Sensacional!
