Temos no dia 31 de outubro a celebração do Halloween, que tem origens Celtas e que é muito comemorada em toda a Irlanda.

On October 31st we have the Halloween celebration, which has Celtic origins and is with widely commemorated all around Ireland.

Um dos principais símbolos desta festa são as abóboras esculpidas iluminadas com velas. E já há muitas nos mercados!

One of the main symbols for this festival are the carved pumpkins, lighted with candles. And there are several on the supermarkets already!

A tradição remonta a uma lenda, Jack O´Lantern. Conta o folclore que um alcoólatra chamado Jack Miserable teria se embriagado e conseguido enganar a morte num 31 de outubro. Conseguiu viver mais alguns anos e quando morreu não foi aceito no céu por que era um homem mau e também não foi aceito no inferno pois o diabo não teria gostado de ser enganado. Então devolveu a alma de Jack de volta à terra, com um pedaço de brasa de carvão para iluminar o caminho de volta. Jack colocou a brasa dentro de um vegetal para servir de lanterna e desde então a alma deste homem vaga perdida pelas noites escuras.

The tradition goes back to a legend, Jack O´Lantern. The folklore tells about an alcoholic person called Jack Miserable, we would have gotten drunk and managed to cheat death on October 31st. He managed to live a few more years, and when he died he was not accepted on heaven because he had been a bad man, and he was also not taken on hell because the devil didn't like being cheated. So Jack's soul was returned to Earth, with a piece of hot coal to light up his way back. Jack inserted the hot coal in a vegetable to use like a lantern, and since then this man's soul roves lost on the dark nights.

Esta história tem diversas variações, mas basicamente a essência é essa.
Antigamente outros vegetais como batatas e nabos eram também esculpidos. Hoje em dia é a abóbora o símbolo do Halloween.

This story has several variations, but this is basically the essence.
Some time ago other vegetables like potatoes and turnips were also carved. Currently the pumpkin is Halloween's symbol.
