Coole Park - O Parque dos intelectuais /The Park of the Intelectuals
In Galway county (near the town of Gort) is located the very interesting Coole Park.On this location used to live the famous dramatist and folklorist Lady Augusta Gregory, who wrote uncountable plays, literary pieces and founded, along with Nobel prize W.B. Yeats, the legendary Abbey Theatre in Dublin (click here).
Here Lady Gregory sheltered Yeats after he went through a serious period of mental exhaustion. And it ended up being a true paradise for the writer and one of his favorite places in Ireland. He even wrote about the park in some of his works, like on this small excerpt in which he mentions about the beauty of the autumn trees."The trees are in their autumn beauty,
The woodlands paths are dry.
Under the October Twilight the water
Mirrors a still sky"
W. B. Yeats - "Wild Swans at Coole"
Veja as fotos abaixo.
Coole Park was the stage for the gaelic literary renaissance at the end of the 19th Century. So around this place walked the most diverse Irish writers and intellectuals like George Bernard Shaw and Séan O´Casey.
To highlight this incredible period all of them left their initials in a tree known as the Autograph Tree. Have a look at the pictures below.
For all these reasons, it is known as the park visited regularly by intellectuals. But all of this was left behind, and what we have today is a pleasant green space with 405 hectares, with a visitor centre, intended to the exhibition of local fauna and flora - and they talk about the incredible life of Lady Gregory, tea room, and several areas for walking, having a picnic with the family, resting a little...
The typical Irish Wall Gardens, surrounded by stone walls.
There are two options of trails. One is lighter, ideal to do with the family - 1.75 Km, and the other is a bit harder - 4.5 Km.
Visitor Centre where the old stable used to be located.
