A Origem do Guinness Book é Irlandesa / Guinness Book's origin is Irish
The famous book of records, the Guinness Book, is reaching its 60th anniversary and the 2015 edition has just arrived on the bookstores. What not many people know is that the origin of this legendary book is Irish.
All started on the 50s last century. Hugh Beaver, who was the Director of the Guinness beer factory (later becoming the company's President), had joined a hunting party on Wexford County in Ireland, and he got involved in a discussion with his hunting partners about which would be the fastest game bird in Europe. That was the moment when Beaver had the idea of making a book to approach similar answers and hired 2 acquaintances who lived in London and worked in a facts and figures agency. The 1st edition was released in 1955 and the success was immediate.
Today it is published in more than 100 countries and in 37 languages. Whenever I go to a bookstore, I like to have a look at this book, it is a very amusing reading, and always surprising.
Vamos focar aqui em alguns recordes irlandeses!!!
We could go for hours talking about the dozens of categories that are part of the book, like the tallest person in the world, the oldest theatre still in service, the shortest river, the most poisonous plant, etc, etc, etc...But let's focus in some Irish records!!!
Sim, é a irlandesíssima Ryan Air tranportando mais de 76 milhões
de pessoas!
Which is the company that transported more people in one year? Yes, it is the very Irish Ryan Air, transporting more then 76 million people!
The sport commentator Micheál Ó Muicheartaigh from RTE
commented events and games for 62 years! Micheál got retired in 2010 when he was 80 years old.
The country that drinks more tea in the world! Our Ireland is on the top with 1,184 cups per year per capita. Which is more or less 3 cups a day.
The Irish like to break records. Last year here in Cork the organization of the Folk Festival gathered the largest number of musicians of Irish music playing at the same time. As we were there!!! The event was open for all the population. It was very amusing.
