Part 4 here
On today's post we will do the Shandon route (red).
EMMET PLACE
Emmet Place is a square right on front of the Opera House theatre, one of the main show venues in Cork. Next to it is also one of the largest art galleries in the city, the Crawford Art Gallery (we will write a post about it soon). The regions has coffee shops, restaurants and you can always find people singing and artistic presentations around the place.SHANDON BRIDGE
Shandon Bridge is one of the most recent bridges in Cork. Inaugurated in 2004.ST. MARY´S CHURCH
St. Mary's church is Catholic. And it has a beautiful architecture, which is highlighted on the margins of the River Lee. On the top of the church there is a lovely sculpture of Virgin Mary looking at the direction of the sky.Interior da St. Mary's Church / Inside St. Mary's Church
THE FIRKIN CRANE
A poucos metros dali fica o Museu da Manteiga, leia aqui.
Firkin Crane building (from 1855) was used by the Butter Exchange to manufacture and fixing butter barrels, called "firkins". Today the Firkin Crane is a cultural centre, dedicated mainly to the dance.A few metres from there is the Butter Museum, read here.
ST. ANNE'S CHURCH - SHANDON
St. Anne's church is known for having a wind vane on the top, called "goldie fish" by locals.Alexsandro tocando os sinos.
You can also play the famous 8 bells at this church. There is even a music folder so you can play songs with the bells. Alexsandro playing the bells.
The church tower has a clock in each of its faces, and it is called by the locals the "4 faced liar". This is due to the fact each clock showed a different time. The strong wind made the hour/minute hands to become poorly adjusted.
The visitor can also climb to the top of the tower and have one of the best views of Cork.CATHEDRAL OF ST. MARY AND ST. ANNE
Close by you can also find St. Mary and St. Anne's Cathedral.SHANDON STREET AREA
Shandon Street is an area which in the old days served as a connection between Cork City and the agricultural areas. Today it is a busy region with several stores.BROWN'S SQUARE
Cork foi durante muitos anos uma cidade murada e para entrar nela era necessário passar por um de seus 2 portões. Aqui ficava o The North Gate. Hoje já não temos mais nenhum remanescente daquela época. Cork foi sempre muito atacada nos seus mais de mil anos de existência.
Assim era esta região em 1790.
This little square is in front of Gate Cinema. Indeed there was a gate there, which was the entrance to the medieval part of the city. Cork was for many years a walled city and to enter it was necessary to go through one of its 2 gates. Here was The North Gate. Today we no longer have any remnant from that age. Cork was always attacked on its more than one thousand years of existence. This is how this region looked in 1790.
NORTH MAIN STREET
And let's finish today's walk on North Main Street, which was one of the most important medieval streets of Cork. Today, bronze plates mark important old buildings which no longer exist, like Skiddy's Castle.
On this street we can also find St. Peter's Church from the 18th century, which was deconsecrated, and today it is a cultural centre called Cork Vision Center.
