Castletown House
We have had amazing sunny days almost all around the Emerald Island. And you just can't stay home. We will take you today to the largest country house in Ireland (it measures 220 hectares). It is also the largest house in Palladian architecture in the country. The term palladian comes from the Italian architect Andrea Palladio, one of the most influencial figures in the western architectural history.
Castletown House is on county Kildare, around 20 minutos by car from Dublin's city centre. This imposing building was constructed in 1722 by William Connolly, president of the Irish Parliament and the richest man in Ireland. Several famous architects participated on the construction, and the drawing was inspired on Leinster House in Dublin (Irish Parliament HQ) we have already shown you at this post.
In 1754 the house went to the hands of Tom Connolly and Lady Louisa who was responsible for big changes on the interior of the house. Many rooms are opened to public visitation and some of the furniture are original.
It is to see, for example, this curious room all decorated with printings. It is the only room like this in Ireland.
The entrance is very beautiful and imposing, don't miss the details on the walls.
The Main Room is the Long Gallery, a 25m long room, beautifully decorated, which was Lady Luisa's favorite one. The colorful chandeliers are from fine Venezian crystal. But she didn't like then when she saw them hanging because it was not the exact shade she wanted to match the wall.
The Long Gallery is used today for events and concerts. A few days ago we were able to watch a lovely classical music concert there and totally free.
The place has a wide cultural and events agenda. Mainly on the spring and summer months. On the old stables and around the house there are markets with food from local producers and handcraft. There are also photographic exhibitions, etc.
And considering this was all very close to be knocked down. One of the members of the Guinness family bought the house and started the renovation is 1967. Today almost the whole house and area belong to the State. This outstanding building was special for the Guinness family because it is in the small town of Celbridge, place where Arthur Guinness was born - nothing less than the creator of the famous beer. Also don't miss Arthur Guinness statues in Celbridge, in tribute to their most honorable child.
On the former kitchen space, now it is the coffee shop, with several options of sandwiches, salads, soups, coffee, pastries, etc.
There is a big green area in front of the house. It is a great place for a good walk.
And to finish it up, a few quilometres from the house you can visit Connoly Folly, an obelisk built by Katherine (first owner's wife) in tribute to her husband.
